"Breakfast is being served in the garden, I trust you remember your way around the place," the older gentleman holding the parasol says with a smile.
"It's been a while, George, how's the baby?"
"My grandson, well he's not much of a baby anymore, he's 6."
"And very healthy I hope," I say grabbing the parasol from him.
"Yes, thank god," He says motioning his hands towards the entrance and walks me there. I close it when we reach the shaded part of the house. "he's playing in the children's room," he says and excuses himself to the other car.
"You've been here before?" Natasha asks.
"Once when I was 17, for about a month. His parents learned my parents' parents had money so naturally, they set a plan to get us married," I say leading her through the big house. Children run around the halls laughing, we maneuver to avoid them. "By the way, forgot to tell you this is the private event before the service, we'll take the car to the church after."
"You said this was the-"
"Y/N, you made it!" Edens sister, Eleanor screams and runs to give me a hug. "I'm so glad to see you again."
"Y/N, darling. Come join us," Mr.Vos says from the table, his beautiful wife of course sits next to him. Eden got his looks from her.
"Mr. Vos, Mrs. Vos, everyone, this is my friend Senator Romanoff. I hope you all don't mind. I've brought her along, her and Eden were great friends." I introduce her to the table.
"I remember you, I sent your invitation to you myself," Eleanor says.
"Her invitation?" I say confused, Natasha smirks at me. The conversation amongst them picks up again.
"You were invited?" I whisper to her as I grab the food from the center of the table.
"Why would I show up here without an invitation?" She smiles smugly.
"Eden, look who's arrived dear," Mrs.Vos says to him as he walks out of the house. He pauses for a moment when he sees my face. Then he smiles really wide.
"Darling, I thought you wouldn't get up early enough for this," he hugs me really tight and lifts me off the ground. "How's the food?"
"I could tell your father didn't make it," I say turning to Mr. Vos. He starts laughing.
"Natasha," he says opening his arms to her, he whispers something to her but I couldn't hear what it was they both laugh.
"Just our luck, congratulations," She says in response. He sits down in his seat. He tells us the story of how he and his bride met. It wasn't very romantic but that was the charm in it he said.
Everyone finishes up and goes their separate ways within the estate. Some go inside to wrangle up their kids and others to wander the grounds. Natasha was getting along great with the family so I felt comfortable leaving her for a bit to talk to Eden. 'The secret spot' was an open space surrounded by trees near the water, since the estate was so large, the groundskeepers sometimes abandoned the maintenance so wildflowers grew and the grass was tall; Eden knew how much I liked it and he put out a wooden bench facing the water.
"Come on baby you can do it, Walk to me," I coo at his baby nephew who we brought along, he laughs and stumbles a few steps over to me. I lift him up and spin him around to celebrate, Edens hands grab my waist and spin us both around. I let out a childlike laugh until he put me down. I set the baby on my lap as we sit on the bench and watch the water. His tiny hands hold my shoulders for balance as he stands up, he plants a slobbery kiss on my cheek.
"You're a bit too forward sir, but I'll take it cuz your so cute," I attack his tiny face with kisses and he laughs.
"You always were so good with children, I always looked forward to seeing you as a mother," His words were honest but they sting as I remember that I could have been. "Do you wish to have any of your own?"
"I've never allowed myself alone for long enough to think about it," The words hold more meaning than he'll ever know. The baby wiggles in my arms, I put him down so he could crawl on the grass. "I have a gift for you," I pull out the light blue envelope that I had stashed in my dress pocket.
"You didn't have to-"
"No, I did," I interrupted him. "Open it," he opens the sealed envelope and flickers his eyes at the money inside. "It's for the ring,"
"You sold it," there was a melancholic tone in his voice.
"No, I love it. I hope to give it to someone one day whether it be a partner or... children," it hurts to say that word in his presence.
"Are you seeing anyone back home?" he asks.
"No- well, it's complicated," The baby starts to fuss and holds his hands up for me to carry him again.
"What is so complicated about your love?"
"I don't want to hurt them, I don't want them to hurt me,"
"I know that what happened with Natasha stings, but don't carry that around with all of your relationships. You allow her the power to control you, and she will do nothing but hurt you again and again because you let her. You submit to her every command like a pet," He spits, "I don't want to see you hurt again,"
"When one loves, one does not calculate," I quote the saint.
"Saint Therese was talking about her love for God," he laughs. "Natasha is the furthest thing from God."
"Yes, but not to me. I am the furthest from a saint, but I plead for her love and acceptance the way believers do with God." My words seem to catch him by surprise.
"You need to think a lot about this, I hope this place helps you with that," he reaches out to get the baby.
"Can I keep him here with me?" I request, he nods his head and walks away.
"You'll help me think won't you," I say to him, he babbles back in response, He is such a happy baby, mine would have been just a bit older, maybe they would have even been friends. Maybe they would have had my eyes or Edens annoyingly perfect face.
"Angel? What's going on? What happened?" The soft voice asks. I wipe the tears away.
"This little shit poked me in the eye," I lie. I knew she didn't believe me.
"You can talk to me about anything Y/N," her body moves to point to me and she places a hand on my lap. Her dark green eyes look into mine with such kindness. I start to lean in to kiss her but bail. The guilt doesn't let me.
"We should get back, they'll start leaving soon," I force a smile. I open the parasol and start walking with the baby in one arm. I expect her to follow but I don't hear her footsteps. She was still on the bench and watching me.
"Coming?"
