The vineyard was beautiful. Sydney, Devin, and Theo joined us but I made sure to leave them alone as much as possible. For them, it was a bonding trip.

I had woken up extra early to watch the sunrise every morning and eat breakfast with Eden. when he would leave for work I rode a horse around the property, returned for lunch, and left on the horse again until Eden would come back. I always found myself at the same spot: at the edge of a nearby creek. I stared at myself in the reflection of the water for a while then walked around in it. I found lots of turtles and small fish. On the last night, I had told Eden what I had decided on his question of marriage.

I arrived home around midnight from the airport, Eden took a plane to England for another meeting with some of the members of parliament that supported his campaign, in 2 years he would be running and he had already begun to network.

I go into the closet and change out of the sticky plane clothes. Out of the corner of my eye, I see something red peeking out of a drawer. As I pull it out I realize the red is only a stain on a white shirt. I hold it up and the sweet fragrance mixes with the alcohol from the stain.

It was Sunday, she was probably asleep but I needed to see her.

Micheal drove me over to her. He told me that Vera had come in but that the door remained open and that she left her office earlier than usual, at 5 pm.

We arrived at a brick building that looked like a church, there were tall stained-glass windows.

"It's a Condo building ma'am, they remodeled the old church." He must've seen the confusion on my face.

"Good, I was starting to think that this was your way of telling me you were homophobic," I wasn't joking but he let out a burst of laughter and wouldn't stop laughing. He broke into another burst of laughter as he got out of the car to open the door.

Usually, 6 agents joined me but today I was only accompanied by 3. Micheal explained to me that one of them would go ahead of me to be sure there was nobody inside that could be a potential threat. It was unlikely but they liked to make sure. The blonde agent knocks and to my surprise, the door opens quickly.

"Miss Romanoff, are you accompanied by anyone at the moment?" He says to her.

"I am," she says, almost like a question.

"I'll have to pat them down, or ask that they leave."

"What's this about?"

"You have a visitor," he states plainly inviting himself in.

She must've decided to have her guest stay because it took a while for him to come back out. Micheal and the other brunette man move out of the way as the blonde walks back over to me.

"Miss Phoenix, I'll have to warn you that you won't like who you find in there," He says sorrowfully.

Micheal grabs my hand and leads me in the door. It was beautiful, the stained glass windows were tall and the art complemented the aesthetic well.

I saw a figure sitting on a chair but it wasn't Natasha. Dark Brown hair, dark green eyes, and of course perfect eyebrows.

I could hear my own heartbeat, and my face heats up with anger. I breathe in and gain some sense.

"Vera? Hi, I'm sorry I never truly introduced myself, I'm Y/N," I reach my hand out for a handshake. She shakes my hand with both of hers.

"Of course, I know who you are. It's an honor."

"Honors all mine." I plaster on a fake smile and look over to Natasha who looks at me surprised and wide-eyed. "I'm sorry I should've called, I didn't know you would have company. I just wanted to go over some ideas about your draft," I cover up the real reason I was there.

She looks down at the counter and her shoulders come down.

"I'll be on my way, I'm sorry to disturb your night. Goodbye Vera, I'm sure I'll see your beautiful face again." I say in a condescending tone.

I reach the door where the three men wait for me. Micheal extends his arm for me to hold. Quick footsteps struggle to keep up behind us.

"Y/N, wait. I'm sorry, I'm sorry." She repeats.

I stop and slowly turn around to face her, my frown slowly forms into a smile.

"I'll see you tomorrow, Senator Romanoff. Have a nice night," I turn back to Micheal and the other 2 agents close behind me forming a diamond formation.

I was too tired to feel anything. The numbness I felt was strange but I was glad it was there.
