Chapter 17: Decision

Alexander was the one who rushed Zanra in the town's hospital. When we arrived several minutes after them, most of the staff were in a panic seeing the alpha's daughter unconscious in their premises. Ms. Laura came rushing in the room where Zanra was brought into while all we could do was wait in the corridor.

Palakad-lakad si Anabeth, hindi mapalagay, habang tahimik akong nakaupo ako sa gang chair. Alexander was a few steps from us, hindi umiimik, mud and dirt on his pants from rushing Zanra from the woods  to the hospital.

Hindi namin napansin ang paglipas ng oras habang naghihintay. It was afternoon when the alpha and Zackary rushed in the hospital, straight from Fabrice. Sandali kaming nagkatinginan ni Zackary before a staff ushered them to Zanra's room.

"We should leave," Anabeth told me. "Makibalita nalang tayo kapag okay na ang lahat."

We were both hesitant to leave the corridor. Nanatili si Alexander, naghihintay. But waiting won't change anything for us. We were about  to leave nang dalawang order ang dumating, humahangos, with mild injuries all over their body.

"Kailangan naming makausap si Sir Zackary," one of them declared, breathing heavily.

As if sensing the situation, lumabas si Zackary mula sa kwarto.  Nadatnan niya ang dalawang order na nasa corridor. "What's the problem?"

"Kailangan namin ng assistance sa border. There's several outsiders..."

Their voices faded in my ears. Napatingin ako kay Zackary, with him listening attentively to the orders, but his eyes wary about his twin. Bumaling siya sa kwarto kung nasaan si Zanra, torn between staying and facing his responsibilities.

"Give me a minute. I'll just-"

"I'll check it."

Pare-pareho kaming napatingin kay Alexander. Umalis siya mula sa pagkakasandal sa pader at lumapit kay Zackary. "You can stay here. I'll check it."

Nagkatinginan ang dalawang orders. Naglakad palabas ng corridor si Alexander, hindi hinintay kung papayag ba si Zackary sa sinabi niya. Pero hindi na kailangan because Zackary seems to trust him more than anyone else.

"Alexander will check the situation on my behalf," Zackary told the orders. "Any command from him is a command from me."

After the ordeal, tahimik kaming umalis ni Anabeth sa hospital.

"Ang hirap siguro 'nun. Rushing here all the way from Fabrice tapos may sumabay pang problema." Anabeth mumbled while waiting for the bus outside the hospital's premises.

They were in Fabrice to deal with the upcoming transition of leadership in Van Zanth. It must have been hard juggling responsibilities and family matters. I was glad that Zackary had people like Alexander. I know they still look out for each other despite what happened between them.

Habang nasa sasakyan pabalik sa apothecary, bigla akong tinanong ni Anabeth tungkol sa tree house. "Nakakapagtaka lang because the last time I heard about it, a storm knocked it down, but it looks perfectly fine."

"Alexander had been fixing the tree house," I told her. "Noong nasalubong natin siya sa kakahuyan, maaaring papunta siya sa tree house."

Nagsalubong ang kilay ni Anabeth. "How do you know?"

"He had tools with him. Nagkalat din sa ibaba ng tree house ang mga materials like old planks and woods. I had a feeling he's really the one behind it."

Napaisip si Anabeth, leaning back on her seat. "I mean, that's not surprising. He used to look after Zanra the same way Sir Zackary looks after his twin."
