Prefect Duties

The Hogwarts train was prepared for another year. As prefects were chosen in fifth year, Elena had recieved her yellow badge over the summers.

"I'm on patrol duties so..." She said awkwardly to Soleil and Felicia, not wanting to be separated from them.

"We'll be in that compartment," Soleil said, pointing to her left, "get there once you're done."

She nodded, and left off to join Heinrey Dane (the other hufflepuff prefect).

"Your friends?" He asked, looking at Soleil and Felicia.

"Yeah."

He looked at them rather untrustingly.

"They're from other houses."

She frowned at him, understanding his implications.

"It's not uncommon for our year to have friends from other houses you know." She said, narrowing her eyes.

He did not respond, and his expressions told that he did not like her.

They walked in silence, and Elena spotted the Slytherin prefects; Elios and Nott coming their way.

Elena was not surprised at Nott being a prefect. Not only did the house teacher of Slytherin (professor Selwyn) heavily favour her, but she was one of the only girls among the Slytherin fifth years (along Soleil, who was well-known as a nut case). Since prefects were always one boy and one girl from each house, she had to be chosen.

"Elios, it's just a prank! Why are you overreacting?!" She said to him loudly.

"You're a prefect. Have some dignity." He scathingly said. He looked away, and noticed the two approaching students.

Dane simply walked past the Slytherin prefects, looking around at the compartments. Nott glared at Elena with a hate she'd not been expecting, but she ignored it. Instead, she looked towards Elios, who smiled. She returned it, and followed her fellow prefect.

"Uh, so..." Elena started, trying to have a conversation with him, "why do you think you were made prefect?"

"Because I'm one of the best students in our year." He simply replied.

"Can't say the same for myself..." she nervously said, hoping that he would try to be warmer.

"You're certainly popular." He said in a matter-of-fact way.

Elena's brain slowed down as she processed this information.

"What?"

"You're popular among students... and then there's the fact that there wasn't anyone else for the badge."

Elena could feel him trying to belittle her, so she huffed back,

"What's your problem?"

"There are only three fifth year hufflepuffs this year, and Cedar lost credibility because of that accident with you in her third year. You didn't really earn that badge."

"Atleast I had competition. No offense, but who else was going to get the prefect badge except for you? You're the only guy in our year." She said to him, returning his tone.

"Still, that doesn't change the fact that I'm the top student in our year."

His face remained unbothered as he spoke, annoying Elena slightly.

"If you really want someone your level as prefect, go ask Shacklebolt to replace me. What have I ever done to you anyway?!"

"I wanted Cedar to get the badge." He replied, and there was a hint of sadness in his voice.

Elena calmed her own voice as she spoke;

"I'm sorry you didn't get what you wanted, but how's that my fault?"

After patrolling the train, Elena rushed to the compartment Soleil had told her to come to.
She opened the compartment door, and found Soleil, Felicia, Sullivan and Elios playing a board game.

"...did I miss something?"
