Warning: mentions of terminal illness, nightmares

It was easy for him to recall. Even if he didn't want to remember it at all.
Stomach surgeries, painkillers, bright lights on white walls. That wheelchair with the IV attached. Hajime hated all of it, and he hated being sick most of all. It was because of his illness that he had been in that situation, why the medical bills just kept piling up over time.
Until one day, his parents missed their weekly visit. He thought that they were just busy at the time, but they never ended up coming to visit their son. The hospital staff called to find out the matter, but they had told Hajime later that they were no longer paying for the bills and had taken him out of the family registry.
Hajime finally gave up, waiting for death after being abandoned by everything. But a miracle occurred to save his life. A boy his age appeared in his hospital room, and Hajime assumed that he was another patient. He told his story to the boy, telling him that he couldn't be saved now. But the very next day, the doctors said that he was cured.
Hajime had nothing left when he was put into an orphanage, and the days began to blur as he abused his blessing of health. It was a nightmare, but it was also reality to him. That boy never made his appearance before Hajime again, and the patient-turned-delinquent was trained out of his unhealthy ways into a competent boxer.
But even so, he could feel his health weakening by the day, now that the boy he met years ago was gone. His days were numbered, he knew it, it wouldn't be long before he was lying in a hospital bed on the verge of death again. There would be no salvation for him, not unless he...
Hajime's eyes opened as he took staggering breaths, and he looked around the dark room. He was on a mattress under a thin blanket, with a thinner body laying next to him. Around him, three more figures were dozing on their respective broken mattresses or old futons. It was all Mikado could salvage while the Remnants of Despair caused a sudden uprising in the city.
It was all coming back to Hajime now. He and three others had been gathered by a lone journalist into a group called the 'Children of Utsuro,' which was later hijacked by the wizard Mikado Sannoji and renamed 'Void.' Nonetheless, the four original members stayed out of desperation.
Mikado told them all that a killing game would be able to bring their saviour back, and Hajime's role was to kill first and create a divide between men and woman in the process. He wasn't sure how he was going to do that yet, but Mikado had promised that he would be spared from execution.
After much demanding from their ex-leader, Mikado had joined the group of five in person, bringing resources and giving them a proper introduction. Their small missions began bringing them closer to success than they could achieve before, and their mood became more hopeful despite what they knew they had to do.
Of course, there was the problem of the Kisaragi Foundation, who kept pursuing them. Mikado had the group settle down in a quiet city, but they were soon stuck in a store that was nearly-buried under rubble as an uprising occurred. Despite what they slept on being uncomfortable, Mikado said that they could use the fighting in the morning as a distraction to escape.
Hajime rubbed his eyes, trying to catch his breath as he looked beside him again. He shared the mattress with the aforementioned wizard, who fell asleep in his clothes after planning an escape route for the group. The boxer found that he couldn't get up now, as the other man had fallen asleep on his arm.
Hajime figured that he was going to be stuck there for a while, so he slightly moved Mikado's sleeping form closer to his shoulder to ensure both of their comforts. He finally laid on his back and stared up at the ceiling, trying to guide himself back to sleep. But the images from his dream - his memories - didn't stop just because he was awake.
As he found it harder to control his emotions, Hajime laid his free arm over his eyes in a vain attempt to block his tears from emerging. The only thing he ended up being successful in doing was suppressing the noise of his crying.
Nearly a minute later, he felt the man on his arm shift and raise his head. "Hm? Oh, Mikado..." Hajime realized, quickly wiping his tears and looking towards the wizard. "Did I wake you up? Sorry about that..."
"I'm just a light sleeper, that's all. I could be jostled by the smallest thing, and I could still wake up," Mikado lied. In truth, he had been awake too, daydreaming about meeting Utsuro again to calm himself down for sleep. But he wasn't obliged to tell Hajime that.
"Oh..." Hajime accepted his reply without a second thought, too trusting of the wizard from the beginning. Such trust was going to ruin the boxer and the group in general. Naturally, Mikado had predicted that, but was under no obligation to inform him of that either. The boxer fell silent again, and the silence was overpowering.
Hajime closed his eyes again, despite knowing that he wouldn't be getting a good sleep that night. He didn't expect to feel the wizard shifting down his arm, laying himself closer to his body, and a pair of arms to wrap themselves around his neck. He didn't need to open his eyes to know what kind of position Mikado was in.
"Settle down, Mr. Makunouchi. You're as stiff as a bowstring," he chided in an even voice. "There's no need to fall victim to your fears. This plan will work, and happiness will be regained."
Like a dose of morphine to his body, the words of his 'leader' began to soothe Hajime's worries. Following Mikado hadn't been wrong so far, so he just needed to continue acting for Void to avoid his fate. He knew that sleep wouldn't be instantaneous from his nightmare, but he focused on the warmth of the man in his arms and the silence of the night.
