"Imagine your OTP+ meeting at a summer beach bonfire. The flames are tall and bright, the water is sparkling in the moonlight, and the air smells like smoke and dying leaves."

It wasn't often that the survivors of the prototype killing game got to go on a vacation. After all, they were the top heads of the Kisaragi Foundation now. Tsurugi Kinjo became the new director and converted the company into an organization that fought the Tragedy.
Rei Mekaru had become the head of the intelligence department, and Teruya Otori had become the head of the treasury department. Both roles were fitting to their abilities and former Ultimate talents, so they were able to concentrate on their jobs and perform them well.
But once in a while, they needed a break. Rei had decided to take Teruya's side when he suggested that the three of them take a break after working so hard. Outnumbered at a time when the Remnants of Despair were being quieter, Tsurugi conceded and set up a date and location for them.
"I'm surprised that there were any islands not affected by the Tragedy in some way," Teruya remarked, stepping off the jet with his bags. It was already evening, but the trio was going
"These ones are near Towa City and have had their water and air purified, but they're not good strongholds to capture, so the Remnants won't touch them," Rei began to explain, but a thought suddenly occurred to her. "Wait a second- Why did you suggest we go on vacation if you didn't think there were islands available?!"
"Keisuke said that a vacation in the Tragedy consisted of getting blackout drunk and taking a day of rest to recover, I thought that's what it meant..." the merchant frantically defended himself. "B-But you guys actually found an island in the end, isn't that what matters?!"
"Both of you, settle down," Tsurugi chuckled, wheeling himself away from the jet with his bags on his lap. "We should go find our rooms and unpack, then we can go to the beach and have some drinks."
"Sounds like a plan!" Teruya quickly agreed, rushing forward to escape the frustrated professor. Rei let out a sigh as he hurried to the hotel ahead of them, and she picked up her bags and started making her way there.
Teruya found his room quickly, and he began unpacking his summer clothes. He had never bought clothes in his current size before the Tragedy, and it was a miracle to him that they actually fit. After he laid out his clothes on the bed, he decided to just get his beach clothes on and hurry to meet his coworkers and best friends.
Donning a beach shirt, his favourite rainbow speedo, and a lei, Teruya hurried out of his room and went to find Tsurugi and Rei. It wasn't hard to find the latter, who was waiting in the hall for the men to finish up already.
"Before you ask, I already ordered some drinks," Rei told Teruya, and he did his best to keep his eyes off her red bikini.
"U-Uh, your hair looks really nice," Teruya stuttered out, and the professor scoffed at him and shook her head. "No, really!"
"It's not like you haven't seen me in a ponytail before, idiot," Rei rebuked, as harsh as ever. "But what's with the reaction this time, hm? I guess your blood certainly isn't not going to your brain."
"Th-That's not true!"
The door opened, and Tsurugi wheeled his way out in his swimsuit. "Sorry for the wait. Changing clothes is a little frustrating when you barely have the strength to move your legs..." the director apologetically chuckled.
"That's fine, we should just go already. Teruya, it's already dark, go set up a bonfire. I'll get our drinks," Rei demanded, quickly leaving.
Tsurugi shook his head with a smile. "She really doesn't mince words, does she?" he remarked, keeping in line with Teruya as they went out from the hotel and onto the beach.
Making a bonfire wasn't hard; Teruya could carry lots of wood and sticks, and Tsurugi carried a lighter on him, among other tools hidden in his wheelchair. By the time he had put all of the wood into a pile and was fiddling with the lighter, Rei had returned with the drinks.
"Don't forget, the smaller ones burn more easily, so they should be lit first. The fire will spread over time," Rei advised, handing Tsurugi his drink. "Why does this psycho cop have a lighter on him anyway..."
"Hey, you can't be too prepared. At least I have it in case of emergencies, or at least in case no one can make a bonfire from scratch," he joked back, and Teruya huffed as he continued setting the fire.
Eventually, the fire caught and spread to the rest of the wood, and Teruya stepped back and handed the lighter back to Tsurugi. He and Rei sat back on the sand, with the professor handing him his drink. Teruya smiled as he watched the flames dance.
The smell of the smoke combined with the sea air, it was enchanting in the moment. It felt like he could stay like this forever, taking a small break on the beach with his closest companions in the middle of hell.
But even moments like this crumbled to ash.
Years later, Teruya smelled both smoke and the sea air again, but the enchantment wasn't pleasant this time. The criminal they were chasing had stood his ground and attacked with magic, burning Rei to ash and sending Teruya flying with air pressure.
Before Teruya hit the water, he was in complete shock at the event. That happy time he spent with Rei and Tsurugi, enjoying drinks while sitting around a bonfire, it was never going to come back, would it?
