The cameras turned off. The outdoor gymnasium's doors opened. The students of the academy were finally free to leave.
And leave they did. The Ultimate students flooded out of the gym in a tired stampede, wandering this way and that in their friend groups as they talked about the past few hours. All of them shared the same feeling of relief at passing the annual Practical Exams.
No doubt that the displays of talent and the outcomes were going to be broadcasted on every news station come eveningtide. Unfortunately, the media rarely gave any peace to Ultimate students, much less celebrity Ultimates or alumni.
Yuki walked on his own while planning to head back to his dorm room. Sora and Yoruko said they were going out drinking after their exams, so they were currently unavailable. As he continued making his way back to the campus's residential building, he started thinking about what he was going to have for supper before going to sleep.
Suddenly, his phone dinged to life with a text notification. When he took his phone out of his pocket and looked at the screen, he was surprised when he saw a message from the class's resident vocalist.
"Oh... Hibiki's throwing a party at her house, and Kanade brought drinks?" he thought aloud, weighing his options on which course of action to take. "...Well, if she brings food, then I won't need to cook tonight."
With those words, he decided to go find the bus stop to go to the party.

"Yu! I knew you'd show up!" Hibiki exclaimed when she saw him on the other side of the door. "Come on in! Lots of drinks on the table, feel free to raid the fridge!"
"Thank you," Yuki politely replied, and headed into the house. The first thing he spotted was Kanade and Syobai having a drinking contest, in which the guitarist was losing but refused to give up. He decided to avoid that mess and go find his closest friends.
A few minutes of searching later, and he found Shinji eating from a small can of cashews. "Oh, Yuki! You came too!" Shinji remarked, and offered the can of cashews to the smaller man. Yuki took a few nuts from the can, letting Shinji continue to eat after.
"I had a feeling you'd come. You like alcohol a lot, Big Bro," Yuki joked, then popped the cashews into his mouth. "Is anyone doing anything here other than drinking?"
"Well, there's a game of truth or dare being set up over there. They're still gathering people, and I'm going to finish this can before I join," the firefighter replied, gesturing over to the living room.
Yuki thanked him and went to the room in question, seeing a flock of people start gathering there. In the mix, he spotted Sora and Yoruko, who he guessed had arrived for the promise of drinks. After a little while, most of the class had gathered
"Alright, is everyone here?" Hibiki asked excitedly, no longer manning the door.
"Yeah! Let's get this thing going!" Shinji agreed. It was plain to see that he was avoiding looking in Hibiki's direction, likely trying to maintain his composure.
After a bit of bickering among the group, Yuki ended up being the one to go first. "Uh... Yuri! Truth or dare?" he asked, having an idea in mind.
The spaceman clicked his tongue in disapproval of a man choosing him, but answered, "Dare."
"I dare you to buy a pizza," Yuki replied. Half of the room ended up bursting into laughter, and the other half began groaning with sympathy for Yuri.
"Alright, what kind?" the spaceman replied without a moment's hesitation. While everyone kept reacting around them, the lucky student got him to order a small pepperoni pizza. It was easy for the others to forget that Yuri was very rich, but his lack of hesitation reminded Yuki of this fact.
The game of truth or date kept going on, even when there was a ring of the doorbell. Nobody protested when Yuki and Yuri said they would go shoo away and door-to-door salesman, and no one cared when they snuck upstairs to somewhere private.
Yuri sat down in the upstairs hallway and put the pizza box onto the floor. "Well, at least there's less noise here. And pizza is good." The spaceman opened the lid of the box and took out a slice.
"Let's split this 50-50," Yuki decided, and Yuri gave him a silent nod as his agreement.
The two of them remained silent as they ate the pizza together, and it took a little while before the box was empty. When it was finished, they sat back for a moment, unsure of what to do or say at first. finally, Yuki decided to break the silence.
"I wonder what the judges at the Practical Exams were actually grading us for," he started. "I mean, they don't have the talent you guys have, right? What standard are they trying to hold us to?"
"Well, I don't expect a man like you to know..." Yuri paused for a moment. "...well, the ladies wouldn't know either. Hope's Peak Academy don't just teach up to nurture our talents, but they also want to collect data. And if we end up giving more data, then we pass."
"What about the annually-drawn students? Lucky students like me don't really have much data to give, all I did on the stage was monologue about how normal I am, haha," he chuckled, stretching out his legs a bit.
"To be honest, I don't think they're grading you on your talent. they may be grading you on PR, making the school look good if even someone drawn by a lottery can come in and be a 'pillar of hope'."
"Yeah, I guess that makes sense. I ended up passing anyway, so I'm just glad I didn't screw it up too badly," Yuki agreed. "How are you doing though? That whole presentation for a space flight AI you did couldn't have been easy to make."
"No need to worry, I'm fi- Hey, why am I letting a MAN be concerned for me?!" Yuri immediately got up and left, taking the empty pizza box with him.
Yuki waited until he was out of sight before starting to giggle. He didn't know if Yuri was warming up to him at all, but having their conversation last at least five minutes in private was a new record!
