I wake up to the sweet, torturous sound of Newt softly calling my name. My head throbs as if a brick had been dropped on it. I roll over and groan, pulling the pillow over my ears.

"Go away," I mumble. Newt grabs the pillow and pulls it away.

"Sorry," he whispers. I wince. "Alby wants me to show you something before everyone else wakes up." Groaning again, I roll over and glare at Newt. He smiles and extends his hand his hand to me. Rolling my eyes, I take it and he pulls me up, handing me a glass of water. I follow him out of the room.

"Why am I in your room?" I ask and he smiles, seemingly holding back a laugh.

"The same reason you have that headache and need to drink that water." I drink the water as I follow him across the Glade, head still pounding. We reach a window in the wall and Newt moves some ivy, allowing me to get a better look. I'm about to ask Newt what we are looking at when I see it. A large, metallic, spider-like creature, rolling down the corridor. Eyes growing wide, I look at Newt, bouncing on my toes.

"Why are you smiling like that?" He asks, eyebrows raised.

"That was so cool!" I exclaim, all pain from earlier disappearing. "What was it?"

"We call them Grievers. Nobody has ever survived an encounter with them," He explains. "That's why only Runners are allowed in the Maze. Understand?"

"Yeah, okay. I understand," I reply. Nodding, I look back to where I had seen the creature. The Door opens, jarring me back to reality. The pounding head returns, accompanied by a pounding nose. I groan and Newt chuckles beside me, taking my arm. Leading me towards the kitchen.

"Yeah, you had a rough night last night." I wince. Why does he have to talk so loud? "Sorry. I guess you know to drink less of  Gally's drink now, yeah?" He lowers his voice. "It'll be better once you get something to eat. Sit here," he gestures to the table and I sit.

He walks away, reappearing later with some food. Placing it in front of me, he sits down on the other side of the table. I play with the food in the bowl Newt gave me.

"So, did you have fun last night?" Newt asks as the other boys start piling into the kitchen. I nod, the pounding head having disappeared a little.

"What I remember of it." I add and he chuckles.

"How much do you remember?"

"Uh...meeting some of the other guys, dancing and sitting with Gally, drinking some drink he gave me..." I trail off, trying to remember what else. Gally walks in, looking slightly agitated.

"What's a bit of fun?" Newt asks mockingly. I cringe and cover m eyes.

"Yep, I remember. That explains why my face hurts," I chuckle before pausing. "Did I at least win?"

"Yeah, you won," he nods, laughing.

"Oh." We fall into a silence for a few moments before I break it. "So...what am I doing today?"

"You'll be a Track-hoe!" He exclaims. "With me!" I smile.

"Aw shuck! I'm stuck with you all day?" I giggle. Newt puts a hand to his chest, faking offence.

"You little..." he laughs, standing up. I stand up and run towards the Gardens with Newt on my heels, tears in my eyes from laughing.
