YOU ARE THE KEY

I sit around the Bonfire, next to Minho, staring out at the Maze.

"Y/n. Earth to y/n." Minho calls, snapping his fingers in front of my face.

"Hm? Yeah?" he chuckles, shaking his head.

"What were you thinking about?" he questions. I laugh.

"Do you want the short or long answer to that question?"

"Um...short answer?"

"I'm thinking about a lot. Everything and nothing." I reply, earning a quizzical look from Minho.

"Okay...And the long answer?"

"I find it odd that they put us here, in the middle of a maze with a bunch of monsters inside of it." I explain. "Why did they put us here? And why erase our memories? Is it a prison? Is it some kind of test?" I shake my head, throwing my hands up into the air. "And why send up only one each month, all of them boys, for years? Only to send up a single girl after all that time? And then the month after said girl arrives, send up TWO, two days apart? And what did the note mean, 'He's the last one, ever'?" I question. "And why does the voice keep telling me that I need to remember? WHAT do I need to rememberÉ I feel like I'm going crazy but I can't stop it!" I exclaim. "What are we doing, celebrating? We should be out there!" I gesture to the Maze. "We should be out there! Searching for a way out! Not in here laughing and celebrating! We should be spending the night out there finding the way out before they decide the Doors don't need to shut! Before they decide to let the Grievers kill us off one by one!" I take a deep breath to calm myself down. Minho looks deep in thought.

"I understand where you are coming from." he replies. "Really, I do. But we can't just send people into the Maze at night. Nobody has ever survived a night in the Maze. We've lost too many great people. Great friends." he pauses, lowering his eyes for a few seconds before continuing. "We can't afford to lose anymore."

"I know. I know you have. I'm sorry. I was just rambling and I'm so...angry at the people who put us here. I just..." I trail off and Minho puts a hand on my arm.

"It's okay. I understand. I felt the same way when I first got here. You're just thinking way too much, okay? You just need to clear your mind. Which is why it's a good thing that you are starting running again tomorrow!" he enthuses.

"Yeah, that's great! And you're right." I reply, getting to my feet.

"Wait. Where are you going?" he asks.

"To clear my head." I reply, heading to the Map Room. I open the doors, the only light is that of a torch in the far corner.

Y/n, you need to remember. A different voice tells me. This time it is a female's voice. You are the key. You need to remember. I cower into the corner, trying to block it out but it only gets louder. Tears start falling from my eyes as I hug my knees to my chest. I rock back and forth, tears continue to stream down my face.

"What do I need to remember? Tell me! How can I remember if my memory was wiped?" I cry over and over, the room I am in slowly getting darker as the torch slowly dies. Soon, I am left in the dark of the room, exhaustion eventually making my eyes heavy. The voice stops and I sit there in complete silence.

"Y/n? Hey, y/n," A voice says, shaking my shoulder. "Wake up, it's time to go." I open my eyes to see Minho. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah...How did you know I was here?"

"Well, I went to your hammock and you weren't there so I started getting ready for the day and came in here only to find you curled into a ball." he explains. "What's wrong? What happened?"

"I came in here to find something in the maps, see what we are missing and fell asleep." I reply. "That's all."

"Yeah, okay. Well, hurry up. The Doors will be opening soon and we need to get out there as soon as possible. Like you said, we need to spend as much time as possible."

"I'll be ready in five minutes."

Y/n, you need to remember! The voice keeps repeating over and over as I run alongside Minho. It distracts me so much, I don't realize he had stopped for a break until he grabs my arm.

"Hey. Hey, y/n. What is wrong with you today?" he scolds. "You need to get your heart in the game. And your head. What's distracting you so much?"

"It's just the voice. It keeps telling me I need to remember and it won't stop." I reply.

"Maybe we should just head back for today. There's nothing new that we haven't seen before. Let's just head back and you can get some rest okay? We'll come back out again tomorrow. Okay?" he suggests. I nod.

"Okay."

We run back to the Glade, only to hear a lot of commotion. I look for Newt and immediately find him. I run up to him.

"Newt? What's wrong?" I ask, holding my breath.

"Ben was Stung." He says, softly. "And he attacked Tommy."

"Stung?" He nods. I throw my arms around him. "How? He's a Builder." He shrugs.

"I don't know." He hangs his head. "They're Banishing him at sundown."

"I'm so sorry Newt!" I didn't know Ben too well, other than the fact that he was a Builder. But Newt has known him for so much longer than me. Throwing Ben to the Grievers would be like throwing his brother to the Grievers.

"I don't want you to come either." He tells me. "I don't want you to have to see that."

"But I want to be there to support you!" I argue.

"Please, y/n. It's hard enough that I have to banish Ben, I don't want to fight with you. Promise me you won't watch."

"Fine, I promise." I tell him. If Newt didn't want me to come then I wouldn't come.

"I have to go. I'll see you at dinner y/n. Get some rest." He says, walking away. I need to clear my head so I head to the kitchen to see if I could do anything. I run into Chuck and Thomas.

"Hey guys."

"Hey, y/n. What are you up to?" Chuck asks.

"I was just about to see if there was anything I could do to help with dinner." He shakes his head.

"We were just there. Frypan's got everything done."

"Oh, okay. I think I'll go take a shower then." I reply with a frown.

"Hey, Thomas. Come on! I hear that Alby wants to talk to you before they banish Ben." Chuck intercedes. "See you later, y/n!" He waves and they take off. I head to the showers and step in, letting the water hit my head as I think.
