I stand in the shower, letting the water hit my head as I try to think. However, I can't think over the terrible screams. I don't know how anyone can ever endure them. They are heart wrenching screams that ring through your ears even when they are done. I immediately know who they are coming from and try to cover my ears. Eventually, the sounds of the walls closing block the screams out. I walk to the kitchen alone for dinner and grab an apple. Everyone else is at "The Banishing" so there isn't a whole meal cooked. I take the apple into the Deadheads and sit by my creek. I let the water run over my feet gently as I inspect my leg. It looks like it is starting to get infected slightly so I head the the Medjack hut. I grab some supplies, wash it with soap and water, before rewrapping it again. As I clean up, I hear the voice again.
Y/n, you need to remember! You are so close! You can do it! What is this voice trying to tell me? It has to be something about the Maze. My mind goes blank. As the screams die down slightly, I decide to head to the Map room to see if I could remember what it is telling me.
I walk into the Maze room, seeing all of the drawings on the table. I look at them, trying to remember, when I see the maps. I decide to try and line them up, day by day to see the changes of the Maze each day. The first week lines up, creating a word. What if that's what I'm supposed to remember? I need to tell Newt! I run out of the Maze room, searching all over for Newt. I spot him by the kitchens, holding his head in his hands. I rush over to him.
"Newt! It's a code!" I cry. "The Maze is a code." He looks up at me, sadness, then confusion in his eyes. Then, it seems as if my words are taking hold and his eyes light up.
"What are you talking about?" He asks. "How can it be a code? That doesn't make sense."
"Does any of this really make sense?" I ask. He chuckles.
"No, I guess it doesn't."
"Come on, follow me!" I exclaim, running back towards the Maze room. I bump into Minho on the way there and just grab his arm, pulling him with me without saying anything. He looks at Newt and raises an eyebrow. Newt shrugs. "Okay, so, as you guys know, I've been hearing a voice in my mind telling me the Maze is a code." I explain. The boys nod. "Well, I couldn't help but feel it had something to do with the Maze and decided to check all the ways it changes from day to day and look! It creates a word." Minho looks at me and gently places a hand on my shoulder.
"Y/n, I think, and I mean this in the nicest way possible, you are going crazy." He says.
"No! I'm not!Look closely! There are letters in the changes of it!" I try to get him to see and understand. I look at Newt. "Newt? You don't think I'm crazy, right?" I turn to him, to find him studying the papers.
"I-I don't know. I mean, we can't dismiss the idea, right? Min, you said so yourself, these maps have to be a part of the way out of here." He moves the maps around, trying to find a pattern.
"Why haven't we noticed anything then? Wouldn't we have found something after two years?" Minho asks.
"Because we didn't know what to look for. We've been thinking that the Maze leads us to something but what if it's much bigger than that?" I reply. They look at me.
"I think you are imagining things, y/n. I'm sorry to say it, but you are." Minho says, shaking his head and walking out of the room. I look to Newt, pleading for him to see and understand.
"Please Newt, I really think-"
"Yeah? Well, guess what?" He yells. "Nobody cares about what you think okay? Because none of this matters! You don't matter!" He slaps a hand over his mouth as soon as it slips out. "Y/n...I-i didn't-"
