Chapter 56
Austin told me he wanted our family to meet first. He also told me that he wanted us to be official first before we had sex, but he made it very clear—he mentioned it five times while I was in his condo and mentioned it again nang ihatid niya ako sa bahay—that he was not giving me an ultimatum. He said that he was okay with just kissing and making out. And that since I was graduating in five weeks, that we should just wait.
"Sure ka bang kasama kami?" Ate Gina asked.
"Yes," I replied.
"Pwede namang hindi."
"Austin told me to bring my family," I said.
Ate Gina's eyes watered again and then she quickly wiped the tears away. She cleared her throat. "Ano ba ang dapat isuot? Saka paano ba iyong pamilya ni Austin?"
I told her what I told my dad. Austin's family was okay. I told Ate Gina to compliment Cohen. Sabi ni Austin ay pwede kong sabihin kahit ano, but I was really in no mood to debate with his dad.
The dinner was at 7PM in an Italian restaurant in Okada. We arrived at the place at 6:45PM.
"Good evening po," he told my parents and Ate Gina and Kuya Robert.
"Good evening," I greeted Tita Anna, Tito Bert, Psalm, Saint, and Cohen. Austin said that he'd arrange for me to meet his sisters.
They exchanged pleasantries.
"Ang gwapo ng batang 'to," sabi ni Ate Gina kay Cohen. Cohen looked at Austin who just shook his head.
Austin looked at me. "Did you say anything to Ate?" he asked.
"I told her to compliment Cohen."
Austin laughed, but he quickly stopped it by pursing his lips together. "It's going to be a weird night for him," he told me.
"Doesn't he like compliments?"
"He's weird about it," Austin replied.
"Noted," I said.
We were given menus. I pretend to read mine kahit na naka-pili na ako ng oorderin ko kanina. When the waiter came back, he took everyone's orders.
"Austin told us you both are lawyers," Tita Anna said.
"Yes," Mama replied.
Tita Anna smiled. "That's interesting."
"Very," Mama said.
"How's working as an ambassador? I have always been interested," biglang sabi ni Papa tapos ay sumagot si Tito Bert. And then they began to converse about the politics in embassy habang si Mama ay umiinom ng wine. Cohen asked Tita Anna something about Canada.
"This is going well," Austin said.
"Did you think it won't go well?"
"Honestly? I was scared."
"Why?"
"Because it's important."
"You're scared because it's important?"
He nodded. "I love my family and you love yours—it's just better if we all get along well, don't you think?"
"Yes, but what if we all don't get along well? What then?"
