Light stared uncomfortably at the ceiling. He was not going to think about the handcuff on his wrist, nor the thin metal chain attached to it, nor the man with the spiky hair who was currently typing something up on his laptop.

And he was most certainly not going to think about the strange feelings that he'd been having recently for the aforementioned man.

Almost against his will, his brown eyes were drawn to L, whose face seemed to glue eerily in the light emanating from the computer. He was eating small candies off of a plastic plate, and didn't seem to be noticing the way that Light was observing him. He knew that he shouldn't he feeling this way. He was the God of the new world after all- and he already had a girlfriend, for goodness sakes!

As if sensing his inner struggle, L looked over questioningly. Light found even his large, panda like eyes enticing, even with the dark lines underneath them...

"Light? Light, I asked you a question."

The brunette jerked out of his reverie, startled and a bit embarrassed to have been caught in the act of daydreaming.

"Sorry, what were you asking?"

He popped a candy into his mouth, eyes drawn back to the computer screen. "I was just asking if you were alright. You did seem distracted, after all."

Light shrugged neutrally. "I'm fine. I wasn't that distracted though, was I?"

L looked up at him once more, and Light felt his heart flutter in a way that he certainly wasn't used to.

"Well, you were staring at me strangely. And come to think of it, your face may have been blushing slightly." The man put a thumb to his bottom lip, looking thoughtfully back at the computer screen. "Interesting..."

"The computer or my 'strange actions'?"

The raven haired man tilted his head to the side. "Both."

Light sighed, turning over. He wasn't willing to deal with verbal warfare and L at the moment, and sleep sounded like a wonderful idea as of right now. The chain connecting them was long enough that it didn't bother their sleeping patterns too much (that is, unless one of them thrashed unusually in their sleep), but L's insomniac sleeping habits often led to sleepless nights for him as well.

His eyes found themselves staring at the ceiling once more, and Light's mind began to drift the way a mind often does in that bridge between sleep and awareness. Instead of happy thoughts of finally succeeding in his plan to become the God of the new world, though, his mind led hi to thoughts of something else. Someone else- L.

*. *. *. *. *.

L waited until he knew that Light was asleep. He could tell by the heavy, deep breathing, and the way that his eyes no longer fluttered constantly beneath their lids. Popping a last candy into his mouth and powering down his computer, he curled up next to Light, brushing up against him. His back was to the taller man, but L didn't mind.

He neither knew nor cared what he was currently feeling for Light (A friend? Something more? It was impossible to tell), but laying like this, with Light to his back, often seemed to counter the effects of his insomnia, quieting his restless mind and making room for more peaceful thoughts. It was comforting to lay like this, even though he didn't trust Light, even though he was almost certain that one day he would face his doom at this man's hands.

Laying like this, with the room silent and the night dark, L could almost imagine that he was back home. Wherever that was. But here, with Light, he felt the happiest that he'd felt in a long while. Light would never know that he'd purposely lain this way, purposely moved closer to him. If anything he would think it the movements that restless sleepers often make in their dreams that brought them to this position.

Even if only L knew the real truth, it didn't matter. Right now, it was almost as of the world itself revolved around him and Light, in this bed, in this little room- and a world without Light would be dark, would it not?
