"Chikaaaaaaa!" [y/n] squealed, running headlong into her friend's arms. "How are you? What are you doing? Can you cone over after school today? Please? Please? Oh please say you can!"

The boy sighed, running his fingers through his dirty blonde hair. "I'll see, [y/n]," he muttered, looking away. She nodded happily and continued to stroll along beside him on the way to their next class, chatting the entire time. Chika didn't say anything, but then again he didn't need to. He often wondered why he put up with [y/n], but other times he knew exactly why. She was bubbly and happy and always kind to others, whereas he was moody and jealous and not exactly social. [y/n] brought out his better side, he supposed; she was like his better half.

"So?" the girl asked curiously, looking up at him with her large, beautiful [e/c] eyes. "What do you think?"

Chika looked at [y/n] with some alarm. He'd spaced out after about a minute or so, and hadn't heard what she'd just said.

"Err..." he said, blushing slightly, "Can you repeat that?"

[y/n] pouted, her lips pursing. "You weren't listening to me!" she scolded, stopping to glare at him and placing her hands on her hips. "That's not what best friends do!"

He looked at her, startled. "Best friends?"

She just laughed. "Of course, silly! We're best friends, and always will be. That's just the way it works," [y/n] stated matter-of-factly. "Chika and [y/n]- the perfect pair!"

In more ways than one, Chika found himself thinking, but he wouldn't allow himself to follow that thought any further. They were friends, and nothing more. He wouldn't dare to accidentally ruin the precious relationship that they had with some likely unreturned romantic feelings, no matter how strong they had been growing of late. [y/n] was so pretty, he found himself noting- everything from her clear [s/c] skin tone and lovely [h/c] hair screamed "beautiful", and it was a wonder that she wasn't noticed by more of the boys in their class.

"You were spacing out again!" [y/n] scolded. "I just asked you my question again, and you completely ignored me!"

Chika felt a blush rising to his cheeks. "S-sorry!" he stammered.

The girl frowned. "You're blushing." She circled him like a hawk, eyeing him up and down. "Something's wrong. What is it? Tell meeeee!" [y/n] cried, attempting to jump on his back for a piggyback ride (although Chika put a stop to that venture quickly enough).

She settled down some, but still stared at the boy with some measure of both curiosity and worry."But really, something's wrong. Are you alright?"

And therein lie yet another reason why [y/n] was so captivating to him. Despite her energetic childishness, she still knew when the moment was right to quiet down and be serious, and seemed to carry within her an innate understand of humans that allowed her to put a smile on anyone's face.

Unfortunately, it also gave her the power to see through to Chika's true emotions and feelings.

"I'm fine," he said, ducking his head to cover his rising blush.

The girl smiled, poking his cheek. She leaned up and placed her lips by his ear, and Chika could feel her warm breath on his ear as she spoke.

"You know," she whispered, lips barely seeming to move. "You're cute when you act like that." The boy looked at her, startled beyond belief, and she just laughed, pulling away and regaining her balance. "Oh, don't mind me. I just say the first thing that comes to my mind at times." She looked at him thoughtfully for a moment, [e/c] eyes distant. "But I never do say anything that I don't mean." Then she shook her head, giggling and racing forwards like she didn't have a care in the world.

Chika stared at her as she flounced along ahead of him, laughing and skipping with childish joy. Maybe... Maybe he did have a chance with [y/n], he realized, barely daring to hope. Maybe he could-

"Chika, you're still not paying attention to me!"

Despite himself Chika chuckled. She was certainly persistent.

But he still loved her all the same.
