"Do we really need these exams? I mean, how important are they really?" Brooks says.
"Pretty important considering your whole future relies on them." I say. They all groan at that while I rub my forehead.
"I hate exams." Nikki grumbles.
"Have there always been scorch marks on this table?" Talia asks. I purse my lips and looks down.
"In the library, Andrea?" Nikki asks, amused.
"No one was hurt." I say defensively.
"Except the table." Jacob says, amused.
I roll my eyes and turn back to my Potions book.
"How do you do this for fun?" Brooks complains. I huff and pull out the Ancient Runes book from the middle of the pile.
"Her, Mr. Curse Breaker. Study up." I snap.
"Merlin how many notes did you write in this?" Brooks asks a few minutes later. Without hesitation Jacob silences Brooks.
"Thank you, Jacob." Nikki says, not even looking up from her book.
That becomes out routine for the several months. Cedric is actually scared at what he's witnessing while Tommy is amused.
"Is this what it's going to be like?" I hear him ask Tommy. I don't hear Tommy's response but I assume it's a nod. "Fun."
"Disarming spell." Brooks asks as we toss the Quaffle around as a warm up for practice.
"Expelliarmus." I say. "How many times do you stir a forgetfulness potion?"
"Three times clockwise." Talia says, catching the Quaffle. "What doesn't change with transfiguration?"
"Hue." Nikki says, catching the Quaffle. "Second brightest star in the sky."
"Carina." Jacob says. He gets wacked in the back by Tommy. "What?"
"That's the constellation the star's in." Tommy says.
"Fuck! Um...Canopus?"
"Are you asking or telling?" Tommy asks.
"Telling?" Jacob says uncertainly. Tommy raises an eyebrow and the bat. "Telling."
"Correct. Keep going."
"What plant's cry is deadly?" Jacob asks.
"Mandrake." Brooks says, catching the thing easily.
And that's how the beginning and end of practice goes, the five of us quizzing each other with Cedirc and Tommy circling us, ready to hit us if we're wrong. We all get hit at least once and the boys aren't going easy with their hits.
"Alright, alright! Damn it! Stop hitting me, Stokes!" Nikki exclaims.
"What's the answer?"
"It's Gryffindor's turn on the field." Jacob says, amused.
"In a second. Williams, what would you get if you add powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?" Tommy asks, repeating Talia's question.
"Give me a second!"
"This was covered in first year!"
"Well first year was a minute ago! You'd get the Draught of Living Death...right?" She asks. Tommy raises his bat threateningly. "You'd get Living Death!"
"Correct. Now Gryffindor can have the pitch." Tommy says.
"Damn sixth year." Nikki grumbles as we all land. We're all massaging some part of our body as we go; Cedric and Tommy look too chipper.
