Coven Connections

On Halloween I've just about had it with Nikki and her obsession with Lockhart as well as Lockhart himself. What really made me want to hit her is when Harry, Ron, and Hermione found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time-again-she said that Lockhart was brave and took charge.

"He only offered his office for Dumbledore, Nikki." I say in confusion.

"Yes, but did you see how he immediately knew the problem, how he didn't even hesitate to help."

"Okay, I'm tapping out. Talia, you're up." I say, getting up.

"Where are you going?" Talia asks.

"To smoke. Don't give me that look, you lot got me into it! It's either go ruin my lungs or kill Nikki. I'm choosing to ruin my lungs." I say. Nikki looks offended at my words.

"Come on, Andy. I'll join you." Jacob says, standing up. Brooks gives us a pleading look to not leave him with just Nikki and a temperamental Talia for company, but I ignore it as I grab my mother's old leather jacket and head towards the door.

Jacob and I walk in silence as we exit the castle and towards the back of the greenhouses. I hand him a cigarette when we get there and he supplies the fire for them.

"Care to explain the outburst? I mean, near everyone knows Lockhart's a fraud, but that was a little much."

"For one, that was my younger cousin that was found next to a literal bloody wall! Secondly...I feel some connection to Harry. Maybe it's because our mothers were in a coven and that connection transferred to us as their kids at least a little bit, but I'm protective of him. So two people that I care deeply for were found in danger, again, and all she can talk about is that fraud and excuse of a wizard." I say, shaking my head before taking another drag.

"It's the coven ritual." Jacob says quietly.

"What?" I ask in a sharp voice.

"Why you and Potter are so close. It's the coven ritual."

"Doesn't explain why I'm protective of Harry and I'm just Ron's cousin to him." I say and Jacob scoffs.

"You're like his older sister. He goes to you just as much, if not more, than he does his best friends. Maybe older sister is the wrong word. Remember how you used to go to Bill in our first for just about everything? Bill was basically your security blanket, and then the blanket was gone you didn't even have a semi-back up and you fell into a depression. You're Harry's Bill."

"He hasn't approached me this year."

"At all?" Jacob asks, raising an eyebrow.

I think back over the conversations so far which include: mild chiding/applause for the car, complaining about Lockhart, advice on how to get Malfoy to shut up, and the secret passageways to avoid his fan club and Lockhart.

"Huh." I say thoughtfully.

"He's having trouble with Creevey and Lockhart cornering him due to his unwanted fame, you gave him the way to avoid them. He told you how Malfoy was treating him, his friends, and his team, so you gave him dirt on the Malfoys as well as a few jinxes and hexes to shut him up-how did you even find those by the way?"

"I spend a lot of time in the Restricted Section...not that Harry needs to know that part." I say, finishing quietly.

"Shocker. And you were scared for him because of the car while also thinking it was brilliant and you told him so; especially when Granger got too big for her britches and made the boys feel bad about it-even after your aunt's highly amusing Howler."
