Saskia is stood beside me very patiently, waiting for me to calm down and make a decision. We're stood outside a tall, plain looking building where orchestra is held every week on Thursday between 6-7:30pm. Auditions are to be held on Wednesday the 16th at 6pm.
I know all of this because I've read the flyer about 18 times. I get my phone out to triple check that it's Wednesday today when Kia slaps my arm.
"You know it's Wednesday, you know it's the 16th today and you know they're doing auditions today. You have your favourite sheet music with you, I've even offered to sit and watch you play. So are you going to do this or not?" She says, hands on hips.
Her expression is calm and non-judgemental, but it's also firm.
I take a deep breath and nod slowly, wandering into the building and following the signs. We stumble into a large, semi-circular room and my eyes automatically zoom in on the piano. It's a beautiful piano, far more expensive than the one at home and that intimidates me a little.
An older man dressed in a flannel shirt with a hideous bow-tie is sat behind a desk. He looks up as we enter the room and looks delighted to see us. We're a bit late, due to my dithering outside and I silently hope that I'm not too late.
"Hello, are you here for orchestra auditions?" He asks, looking at the both of us.
"He is, I'm just here for moral support." Kia says, gesturing to me.
"Ok, my name is Brian and I'm the conductor, what do you play?" He asks, eyeing me up and down.
"Piano." I mumble, flashing my sheet music.
Brian grins, flashing a brilliant set of teeth.
"Wonderful, I will ask to listen to you play so that I can gauge your ability and whether you'd make a good fit with the rest of the orchestra. You can play anything you'd like!" He says with a flamboyant sweep of his arms and I can already tell that he was made to be a conductor.
He takes a seat next to Kia, making an exaggerated show of getting comfortable. I nod slowly, making my way to the piano. It's set at the back of the room and I take comfort in that. I stand for a moment and take it in, running my hand gently over the keys before taking a seat.
I place my music on the stand and take a breath to calm down. It's not like I'm playing to a huge audience. It's just my sister, and a weird man with a curly moustache dressed in a brown bow-tie with ducks on it. A glance over to them lets me know that Kia is doing her best not to laugh at Brian, who nearly just fell off his chair.
I open up my book to one of my favourite pieces and settle my hands on the keys. Closing my eyes, I think of Clara. I imagine her in my mind, her glowing golden hair and the sweetness of her smile. I think of the fluidity with which she moves and concentrate on producing something worthy for her to dance to.
I concentrate purely on the music, my hands sweeping over the keys knowingly, without any strain. I smile, getting comfortable and maybe even showing off a little.
The music comes to an end too soon and I make sure to finish perfectly, pressing softly and letting the final note draw out, not yet willing to let go. I exhale shakily, looking up to see Saskia's expression.
She's smiling widely, nodding at me. I flick my gaze to Brian sat next to her and he's smiling widely also. He springs to his feet and claps loudly, saying 'bravo' in-between claps.
"A beautiful piece, not what I was expecting certainly but beautifully executed! If you'd like there's a pianist position with your name on it! It shall be so nice to have a pianist on board, I've been filling in while we try to find a replacement but really, I much prefer conducting." Brian says, speaking at a 100 miles an hour.
I simply nod, waiting for him to take a breath.
"Fantastic! We'll see you on Thursday for practice! Every Thursday at 6pm, unless it's on Wednesday and in that case it's Wednesday at 6:15pm! Unless I'm late, which I usually am!Got it? I'm glad! Here's a sheet of the pieces that we play, although we'll be branching out now that we have some new talent! Oh, oh dear, I have to go, I'm twenty minutes late, I'll see you tomorrow!" He says, speed walking out the doors as he speaks.
"Have you ever seen Alice in wonderland?" Kia asks and I chuckle.
"White rabbit." I mutter, following her out the way we came. I clutch my music tightly, not entirely sure that I fully comprehend everything that just happened, but reminding myself that I am now part of an orchestra.
"I um, don't really know how I feel about this." I say, waving the sheet of paper in my hand.
"It's a good thing, Kit. You'll meet new people and do something fun all at the same time." Saskia says confidently. I nod, not entirely convinced.
I suppose only time will tell. My heart flutters anxiously at the thought of playing tomorrow in front of total strangers. I think, instead, of being able to watch my soulmate play violin for the first time. Of being able to watch just what music means to her, and how she plays. I smile, nodding to myself and feeling just a tickle of excitement for the first time in a long time.
