At the soldiers order, each of the girls sat down at a TV, body's trembling and cheeks shining. Nova reached forwards, hands shaking slightly and placed the headphones on when the soldier told them to do so. The TV's all flickered on and bright colours took over the screen.
Nova wasn't that big of a fan of Snow White and had only ever watched it the once so she'd forgotten most of it. She swung her legs on the seat, too short to reach the floor as she stabbed the straw into her juice box, taking a small sip and not particularly enjoying the taste of it. The toddler had a sweet tooth and apple juice with no sugar just didn't taste as good as it usually did at home.
A few nurses came into the room, the soldier still keeping an eye on the girls from the corner of the room, all hold IV drips on a metal pole with wheels. None of the girls seemed to notice, too engrossed in watching the colours flicker across the screen, failing to notice the difference in this version of Snow White compared to the original, less gory one.
Nova was picking at her juice box with her nails, tongue poked out of the corner of her mouth in concentration, the pictures and sounds form the film all just background noise to her as she continued to pick at the cardboard box. Her eyes would flicker up to the screen when a song would start but other than that, the film didn't interest her. She'd much rather be watching The Little Mermaid, The Lion King or 101 Dalmatians.
All of the girls were now mostly, if not completely, calmed down from their tears, only tear tracks down their chin if they hadn't wiped them away. They failed to notice that the nurses had gotten out some syringes and were flicking the end of the needle as they walked towards the girls that they first came to.
A small high-pitched yelp came from the girl at the front of the room and a few of the girls turned around, some not hearing and others too scared to move. Nova glanced up from her juice box towards the sound and saw a nurse attaching an IV to a brunette girl with chocolate skin; she looked about four years old. A tear ran down her cheek at the feeling of the needle as a woman put some tape over it, keeping it in place.
Nova turned back to the TV as her hands continued to fumble with the pieces of torn cardboard. Looking down, she saw that her Kiwi teddy was still in her lap and she held it tightly with one hand, squeezing it a few times as she then looked back to the screen, seeing Snow White making a pie.
The nurses went around all of the girls, putting these IV's into their arms as they cried silently, watching their film. A small nurse made her way over to Nova. She had thin grey hair and slightly wrinkly skin; she looked as though she was in her late 50's to her early 60's. Nova looked up at the nurse, still picking apart her juice box and squeezing her teddy.
The nurse leant down slightly, grabbing the needle and prying the teddy from Nova's hand and placing it on the desk in front of the ebony haired toddlers TV. Grabbing Nova's arm, the nurse bent it so her inner elbow was facing up. She grabbed a cotton wool ball and dabbed some rubbing alcohol onto it before wiping Nova's inner elbow to clean the skin.
Nova gasped as the needle went through her skin, tears pricking at her waterline as her bottom lip wobbled slightly. The nurse didn't even spare her a glance if she was okay like the doctor usually would at home but put some tape over the needle to keep it in place, rolling the IV stand next to Nova's chair before moving onto the next girl, leaning Nova confused and concerned.
The toddler glanced up at the IV bag and noticed the liquid was a light pink, almost the colour of a strawberry milkshake. Nova could feel it seeping into her veins and it caused her discomfort as she started to scratch at the tape and needle. A hand grabbed hers, stopping her scratching and she looked up to see the same nurse looking down at her.
"Don't scratch." She ordered sternly.
Nova nodded silently, taking her hand away from the needle and returning it to her Kiwi teddy. Her eyes flickered back to the film in front of her and her eyebrows furrowed a little. No, she didn't like Snow White but she didn't remember all of the blood in it from last time. She also didn't remember the distant words that were being spoken into her ears but she didn't understand them. Shrugging it off, she took another small sip of her juice and grimaced at the watered down flavour.
