IT HAD BEEN PARTICULARLY COLD
the night before, and Taylor wished she hadn't pissed off Daryl so she could ask him if she could borrow his poncho for the night.Instead, she huddled up close to Ryan for warmth, but he was particularly cold himself, so the body heat was lacking.
Sometime in the midst of the bitter night, she rushed off to one of the guard towers, hoping the enclosed space would provide her with some warmth.
But the isolated room was lacking too, and she was forced to brave the freezing night.
She sighed in frustration when she woke up, feeling the symptoms of a common cold.
The runny nose, sore throat, congestion, and headache were all their as she rubbed her hands together for the warmth of friction.
Seeing Daryl walk into the guard tower, she smiled gently, "Morning. I'm...I'm sorry about yesterday. It was wrong of me to ask.".
Furrowing his eyebrows, he sat down beside her, "Nah, you don' gotta be sorry. It's just uh...a sensitive topic for me. You alri'? Why ain't ya' with the others?".
Shrugging, she replied, "I uh...I hoped the guard tower would be warmer to sleep im, but I was wrong. Now I have a magnificent cold.".
"Oh babygirl." He sighed, "Here." Taking off his poncho, he wrapped it around her, "It ain't much but it'll keep ya' warmer.".
Smiling as she bundled up into the warm fabric, she smiled, "Thanks, Daryl.".
Grinning, he patted her head, "No problem, kiddo.".
"You know...my biggest dream has been the chance to see snow. Growing up down south, it seems like a one in a million chance." She sighed, her fingertips tracing the rough texture of his poncho.
"...Well...I uh...went on a guys trip with yer dad, uncles, Merle, an' Joel an' Tommy a few years back. You, Ellie, an' Sarah were still pretty young, an' Joel had jus' gotten his divorce." He explained.
The teen thought back to her childhood years, remembering the Miller family.
She hoped they all had made it through the outbreak, and were out there; surviving.
Snapping her out of her thoughts, Daryl continued, "We went ta' Washington, an' one mornin', when we stepped outside o' our hotel, it was snowin' it's ass off. So, we had a snowball fight like a bunch o' six year ol' right there in the hotel parking lot.".
