Blood pounded in her ear, or maybe it was the loud thumps of the chasing beast vibrating through her body. Didn't matter. Her legs were numb, and she was running so fast that she kept tripping over the wind.
She could hear the giant bastard behind her purposely knocking down buildings to shake the ground below her and limit her paths. Soon enough, a domino effect of buildings followed her before eventually knocking down a building right in front of her. The crash shook the ground and knocked her to it. She quickly scrambled to her feet and cursed the distance her fall cost her. The repetitive, pounding steps rattled her teeth more, indicating he'd definitely gained on her. When she turned the corner, she glanced over her shoulder. He physically slid when he rounded it too, practically slamming into another building. It didn't slow him down much, and when they made eye contact, he smirked.
"I dun' think she's gonna make it," a new voice chipped in.
She glanced at the two giants standing on the sidelines before focusing back on her path.
"I'm telling ya. I was on her yesterday, and she beat me." another voice argued.
"'Cuz yer soft," the first giant protested.
"I'm na'-" the second giant pouted, "Whatever."
"I can smell her fear," the giant chasing her called to his watching friends.
She bit back a bitter retort. He didn't deserve the satisfaction, and she needed to preserve the air in her lungs if she wanted to make it. Unfortunately, she could tell the chances of that were slim. Adrenaline was giving him speed, and exhaustion was taking hers. He was inches from her tail. Her best bet would be to dart into the nearest building and try to trick him. He could try to level the building, but most giants liked their dinner whole and alive. He wouldn't risk it.
"You got a minute before the plug's pulled," the first giant called.
She grunted. She looked around for a building with an open door, but before she could act, a dark shadow cast over her and the thuds of footsteps and falling buildings paused for a single peaceful moment.
"Fuck," she murmured under her breath.
She scrambled to make a full 180, but the thunderous landing of the giant leaping over her knocked her off her feet again. She landed painfully this time and struggled to get back up. To make matters worse, he'd knocked down one of the buildings to block her old path.
That bastard.
Nonetheless, she got back to her feet and-
"SHIT!" she shrieked.
Trees for fingers wrapped around her and yoinked her into the air. She found herself face to face with the beast. He purred and licked his lips.
"Howdy, dinner."
"I told you!" the first giant sneered.
"Harper had 19 seconds left! That counts for something!" the second giant countered.
"19 seconds?" Harper exclaimed incredulously.
"Hah!" the giant who'd captured her sneered.
A 15 minute mark was signaled to end exactly when the city around them dissipated, leaving them all in a white room.
"I would've lasted if you guys hadn't distracted me," Harper snapped at the sideliners.
"Oh bah~" the second giant, Ulrik, cooed.
"They're na' the one who goofed up on the last turn," her catcher, Lachlan, huffed.
