There was a knock on his bedroom door.

    "Come in," the king announced.

An older guard popped his head through the door. "Your majesty, a human prisoner has requested your immediate council."

"I dun' grant such things t'prisoners, especially not humans. If he presents a strong enough case, then I might consider seein' him at a later date." the king said.

"She," the guard corrected, "And she's been insisting for the past week now. She claims to know you."

"Prisoners will say anythin'. I dun' know any humans." the king dismissed.

"Well she did have quite unflattering evidence," the guard said.

    The king scoffed. "Like what?"

"Well...she mentioned how you eat twigs, and-"

"I can assure ye I do not. Now, send this lying scoundrel straight in." the king snarled. The guard left and quickly returned with a young woman wrapped in his fist. The king glared at the woman, and she flashed him a defiant grin.

"Ye may leave us," the king informed the guard as he placed the woman on his nightstand.

"In your personal room? This isn't exactly the council room. Are you sure you'd like to be alone...with a criminal? They suspect she came to assassinate you." The guard rambled. The king looked down at the young woman again.

"She won't kill me," the king reassured him, "But thank ye." The guard hesitantly nodded before shutting the door behind himself.

"I won't kill you, but I should. I had to spend a week in jail, Ulrik, because they thought I was coming to assassinate you just because I requested to see you and you didn't tell anybody beforehand that I was a friendly human." she hissed.

"I'm sorry, Harper, but I have a reputation t'uphold now. And it's weird t'say I have a human friend." Ulrik protested, "And I didn't eat twigs. I snapped them in half with m'teeth demonstrate how easy it would be t'snap a human in half." There was a whole social divide between humans and giants where giants ruled both giants and humans, and treated the humans like trash.

"Why do you hate humans so much? Are we that bad?" Harper huffed.

"No. 'Course na', lass. But ye know how giants are." he stated apologetically.

"The actions of others does not justify your actions, asshat," she snarled.

He opened his mouth to protest.

"Look, I don't even expect you to say we're friends. You could just lie, and say I'm a supplier or representative or something." she spat, "There's a whole revolutionary movement about overthrowing you and the giants, but I've been relentlessly supporting you despite agreeing with half of the things they're saying. I just...I don't know. We made a promise when we were kids that we'd be friends forever, and I guess I should've known we were just stupid kids back then, but I thought it meant something."

They met when they were kids. He had just starting training to take on his father's legacy. But she didn't care that he was a giant or a royal. They snuck out to meet each other often. It offered them a break from the real world.

"It did, Harper. I promise." He offered her a hand to step into. She didn't make an advance to step into it, so he drew his hand back. "Ye're right, and I know I messed up. I'm really sorry, lass. I promise ye'll always be m'best friend. And if ye'll come back again, then I'll make sure t'inform m'staff that ye're a welcomed guest."

    "Promise?" she challenged.

"Promise." He smiled. "They'll know that ye're m'best friend, and ye're always welcome."

"You don't have to do all of that. I understand."

"Well I'm telling them anyway. Ye're a good friend, lass, and I miss ye and want ye around more." He held out his hand again. "Please?" She sighed, trudging into his hand. He wrapped his hands around her and cupped her close to his chest.

She sank into the cushy material of his pajamas. "I missed you, dumbass."

He smiled. "I missed ye too, lass."
