“I see you found my little secret,” the man murmured quietly as not to disturb the sleeping girl.
The other giant jumped at his presence. “Theo! You can’t keep a human!” he hissed, “You need to turn it in!”
“Keep your voice down,” Theo soothed, “You’ll wake her. She has a hard enough time sleeping as it is.”
“You need to turn it in! Those little creatures are dangerous.” the giant whose name was Raf informed him sharply.
“Look at that tiny, little thing. She doesn’t have an ounce of malice in her body.” Theo cooed, looking down at the small, napping child.
She looked so peaceful. Her features were as soft as the makeshift blanket she was clutching onto. He hoped she was getting a good sleep for once. All her naps seemed to be filled with nightmares.
“Well when they get older, they’re deadly. You need to turn it in while it’s still young.” Raf huffed.
“They’ll kill her,” Theo muttered numbly.
“It’s either them or us,” Raf warned.
“She’s just a child. She’ll only be dangerous if she grows up full of hatred, but I can take care of her and show her that we’re not evil. She deserves a chance at life before we mark her as evil and snuff out the poor little thing’s light.” Theo protested.
Raf scoffed. “You plan on raising her?”
Theo shrugged. “I guess. I’ll take care of her, but I’m not trying to be her parent or anything.”
“How long have you had her?” Raf questioned.
“A few months,” Theo told him.
“And you didn’t tell me?” Raf challenged.
“Well, I kinda expected you to have the reaction you’re having now,” Theo countered, “You want to kill her!”
“I’m just worried she’ll kill you!” Raf snapped.
Theo was silent for a bit. “Get to know her,” he suggested.
Raf shook his head. “You need to turn her in. I know you’ve gotten attached to her, but humans are dangerous. It’s for the best.”
Theo bit his lip, contemplating whether he should wake the little thing up. She’d managed to stay asleep through their bickering, so she must’ve finally been sleeping well. At the same time, he was worried Raf would do something rash, thinking it was for the greater good.
“Wake up, little one,” Theo cooed, swiftly wrapping a hand around the tiny thing.
She started to stir as massive fingers encompassed her and her blanket slipped out of her grasp. Her eyes shot open to make sure that the hand was in fact connected to her giant and not some other evil giant. When she clearly saw that it was, she relaxed. To replace her blanket, she grabbed his thumb and wrapped her arms around it.
“I was sleeping,” she whined.
“I know, lass. I’m sorry. I just wanted you to meet a dear friend of mine.” Theo gestured to Raf, “This is Raf. Raf this is Wendy.”
Wendy’s head shot towards Raf, seemingly now noticing the other figure in the room. She gasped and scooted to the very edge of Theo’s hand to put as much distance as possible between her and this new giant. Theo even had to stop her from falling right off the edge with his other hand. The little thing was already shaking, and he was pretty sure she would start crying soon.
“It’s okay, little one. He’s a friend of mine. A very close friend. He won’t hurt you.” Theo reassured her. He wasn’t sure if it was true or not, but he wasn’t about to tell her that.
“Please,” Wendy barely whimpered.
“It’s okay, little one,” Theo repeated, gently stroking the shaking girl’s backside, “This was also another reason why I didn't introduce you two before. Poor, little thing is scared of giants. It took me a week to get her to come out from under my couch, and even then she only came out because she was dehydrated and starving. A little over a month ago, I couldn’t even touch her without her crying. She’s much more scared of you than you should be of her.”
Wendy looked confused, but her confusion was trumped by fear. She just silently sat there, shaking.
“Oh jeez. She really is scared of me.” Raf murmured, “Would she get used to me quicker if I held her?”
“No!” Wendy screamed, latching onto one of Theo’s fingers.
“No one’s gonna make you do anything you don’t want to do, little one,” Theo soothed before turning to Raf with a smirk planted on his lips, “Already attached, eh?”
Raf gave him a pointed look. “Just because I don’t agree with it, doesn’t mean I was gonna do something that would affect you in the first place. I just hope you’re right.”
“Well thank you.” Theo smiled. He looked down at the girl still death-gripping his finger. “You’re gonna be seeing Raf a lot more, lass. I promise he’s not an evil giant. You’re just as safe around him as me.”
Wendy glanced at Raf before looking back up at Theo pleadingly.
“You don’t have to let him hold you today, but can you try to get more comfortable with him?” Theo asked.
Wendy glanced at Raf again before nodding up at Theo. She seemed to try to relax, but she still looked stiff and anxious. At least her shaking had stopped. Eventually, she flopped over into Theo’s hand.
“I’m going back to sleep,” she announced.
Theo drew her to his chest, and she weakly grabbed onto the fabric of his shirt and snuggled into him.
“Okay, that’s adorable,” Raf conceded.
