She weakly held the rusty sword in both hands as she walked deeper into the dimly lit cave. She could see something glistening in the back of the cave.

She didn't see any monsters, but there were so many tunnels and blind spots that she could never be sure. That meant the monster was either not here, or it knew she was here and was watching her. She prayed it wasn't the latter.

All she needed was the cherished sword, and she was out of here. Her brother had stolen the heirloom from the king, so he could pawn it off. She knew he was only trying to help make ends meet, but god how she wanted to pop him upside his head right now.

Now if the sword wasn't returned by sundown, Daniel was to be publicly lynched as a dirty thief.

Luckily she had been given a moment to talk to Daniel yesterday. He had directed her to the crook he had sold it to, and the crook directed her to the highly-established, monster slayer that had bought the so-called "enchanted" sword. Technically, she had only run into a few of his colleagues who said the slayer had gone on a quest to slay the beast that nestled in the mountains. They told her that they wouldn't help her get the sword back, but they did lend her a rusty, old sword that they said she could keep if she survived. It wasn't a very encouraging talk, but she had to save Daniel.

As she got closer, she could see gold, silver, gemstones, weapons, armor, and many other luxuries piled in the back of the cave. If the sword was anywhere, then surely it was in there.

After an extensive search, where she jumped at every single shift of an object in the pile, she found the heirloom: a solid gold sword with a velvet handle, and the royal family's crest engraved on the side of it. She breathed a sigh of relief, covered her mouth after making the noise, and speedily tiptoed to the cave's mouth.

"Ye thought ye could just steal from me without even sayin' 'hey'?" a loud voice echoed from the left side of the cave. She tried to sprint, but it was hard to while awkwardly carrying a heavy sword in each hand. A thunderous, stomp-like sound rattled the ground, causing her to fall and lose possession of the swords. A giant, wrinkly man with a single horn on his bald head emerged from a tunnel on the left side of the cave. She hurriedly grabbed the gold sword and tried to scoot to the mouth of the tunnel.

"I'm sorry," she whimpered.

He took two steps closer to her, "I would've gone wit' tha rusty one if I were ye. Gold's a pretty weak metal, mostly just good fer decoration. It might give me a teeny papercut before it snaps. Besides, tha rust would leave some longer-lasting damage, eh?" She dropped the gold sword and reached for the rusty one, but the giant kicked it away.

"I'm sorry!" she cried out, grabbing the gold sword again and held it improperly.

The man crouched down, "Do ye have any idea wut yer doin'? That's na' how ye hold a sword. Ye look like a young lass. Are ye tryin' to prove yerself or somethin' by comin' t'slay me?"

"No," she sniffled, trying not to cry, "I just needed to bring back the sword."

"Such a puny lil thing t'lose yer life over," he chuckled darkly.

"Please," she whispered, "My brother's going to die if I can't bring this sword back to the king by sundown."

"There's a whole story, eh? Ye lil morsels are all so overly complicated." he shook his head, "Alright then. I have nothin' better t'do than hear it."

She was slightly shocked that he was willing to entertain her troubles, but she knew better to ignore the opportunity, "The king raised the taxes, and my family can't afford to keep our home. My brother was pleading with the king when he saw the sword. He stole it after the king rejected his plead and sold it to a random crook to help pay the taxes. The crook sold it to a monster slayer who came here to uhm...slay you."
