Prologue

With each new day, we start the same routine again, we frequent the same places, we see the same people.

But for some of us, every day brings its share of surprises.

As we wake up each morning, we realize that this new day won't be like the previous one. It won't be like any other. We're going to meet lots of more or less endearing people and we're going to interfere in their lives, for a few minutes, only to come out just as quickly.

Chapter 1

"9-1-1, what's your emergency?"

"You are hacked » called out a mechanical voice."

– Sorry? Maddie jumped.

"The pile-up, at the crossroads between Mapple and Olympic, is the work of a hack into your traffic system. A bad guy has entered the system and is keeping all the lights green."

– And how do you know that? she asked.

Maddie had been a 9-1-1 operator for over two years.

She had joined her brother in Los Angeles, after having left Doug, her ex-husband who was an abusive man.

But that story was behind her.

Today she was with a cute firefighter, who worked with her brother and she was expecting a child from him. She had already announced her pregnancy to her brother for a few weeks.

He had been happy with this news, happy for her.

Maddie was in her early 30s. She sported shoulder-length chestnut hair and brown eyes.

She pulled one of her locks of hair behind her ear and focused on the disembodied voice calling for help.

"I know because I entered the system and am trying to eject it."

– Have you entered our computer system? she repeated.

"I had no choice and, between us, your firewall sucks. What's the fuck?"

– What? What's happening?

"This bastard has extended his device to three blocks around the first crossroads."

– He wants to cause other accidents?

"And he doesn't intend to stop there."

– I'm listening to you!

"He wants to slow down the arrival of help. I will try to stop his progress. Ask them to make some noise!"

– Noise?

Maddie found it hard to keep up.

It was a bizarre call, almost surreal, but she knew full well there had been a massive pile-up in South of Los Angeles.
