Chapter 1

St. Paul, Minnesota, 1983

Bobby was holding his girlfriend's hand.

It was the first time he had fallen in love. This girl was just great. They had been together for almost seven months and everything was going well. He had struggled to gain self-confidence, but thanks to Haley, everything was fine.

Despite everything, this morning, Haley seemed elsewhere, as if disturbed. She was even uncomfortable and Bobby was starting to worry.

– You're okay? he inquired.

– Yeah, I'm fine, she reassured him in her teenage voice. I don't even have nausea anymore.

– And the doctor, what did he say?

– I didn't go, she said.

– Why? You've been feeling bad for a while, it got me worried.

– Because now I know what I have.

– Haley, tell me! You're worrying me!

The girl stopped herself forcing Bobby to do the same. He frowned. He didn't like mysteries and even less when his girlfriend's health was at stake.

– I'm pregnant.

Bobby struggled to understand.

He couldn't figure out how he felt. It was so unexpected, so amazing. He was going to be a father? Him? At fifteen? It was so...

Haley had a hard time meeting his gaze. He brought her hand to his lips which made her look up at him and he smiled at her.

– Are we having a baby? he asked to be sure he understood.

– Yeah, she breathed.

– Do you think I would be a good father?

– You'll be the best of fathers, she smiled happily at him.

– I love you Haley and from now on, I'm going to protect you. I'll protect you both, he promised.

St. Paul, Minnesota, 1984

Bobby was holding his girlfriend's hand.

He had insisted on being present. Haley's parents had tried to stop him, but his own parents had fought for his right to be there. He may have been fifteen, but he knew what he wanted and what he wanted was to see his child born.
