Chapter 1
Holly lifted her drink to her lips.
She was an athletic young woman of thirty-six. She had pulled her brown hair up with a clip. Several locks had escaped from it and framed a white face, dotted with freckles. She had arrived in Los Angeles less than four months ago and had joined the police force, alongside her sister-in-law, Athena Grant, a woman of strong character.
Maddie had just got up to go to the bathroom. In the hour since they'd arrived, her "mini-bladder," as she called it, had forced her to abandon her at least four times.
Maddie was a few years older than Holly. She had worked at the Los Angeles 9-1-1 call center for almost three years. She shared her life with a firefighter from the one-eighteen brigade for almost two years and she proudly sported a plump belly. She had less than two months left before giving birth and she was really looking forward to it being over.
Holly really liked Maddie, her freshness, her outspokenness and her slightly cheeky side. She had to admit that if she got close to her at first, it was mostly over her boyfriend, Buck. But now, she was his friend and it felt good to confide in her, even if she still didn't know anything about her relationship with her brother.
She suddenly saw her friend come back as the waiter put a drink on the table.
– Excuse me, she reminded him. You must have made a mistake, I didn't order anything.
– It's this young man who offers you this drink, he replied, pointing to the young man at the bar.
He gave her a smile and he waved at her. She didn't know him. Maddie slid into her chair as Holly grabbed the waiter's sleeve.
– Bring him his drink and tell him I'm not interested!
Maddie watched as the waiter retrieved the glass and returned it to its owner. She had the same smile as her brother.
– Rarely have I seen such a violent rake, she remarked.
– What?
– Poor man, she complained, seeing him leave. In his place, I'd like to disappear underground.
– Oh! Holly blurted out, seeming to realize her brusqueness. I guess maybe I should have put more shapes into it. It's just that... No, let it go.
– Is it related to Franck Mitchell? Maddie asked.
It had been a little less than three weeks now since Holly had come face to face with this man. He had kidnapped and held her, then he had threatened to go and kill her brother, Bobby.
