Prologue

The fear!

It's an intense and uncontrollable feeling thatparalyzes us. You feel fear in the presence or the prospect of danger. Thephysiological manifestations that accompany it, such as increased heart rate, wideningof the eyes or goose bumps, are due to the release of a hormone: adrenaline.

Chapter 1

5 minutes before the first shaking.

Franck got into the prison van.

He was a man in his early forties. He was dark-haired with short hair and wore a beard of the same color, since the beginning of his incarceration. He was no longer in the seduction since his arrest.

Nothing really interested him anymore, not even his own trial.

He glanced at his brother, who was dragging his leg behind him like a dead weight. The doctors had sewn it back on him but he hadn't recovered his sensations. He could never use it again, but he still refused to accept it.

Franck couldn't make him listen to reason on this, he could only see his brother suffer, day after day.

He was smaller and frail than his older brother. He had always looked like an outsider with his long hair and clothes, straight out of the seventies. Quite the opposite of Franck, who was always dressed to the nines.

At least today, they both wore the same orange jumpsuit.

Franck had resented his younger brother very much after his arrest, but it was his brother and he had forgiven him. He had paid dearly for his betrayal. He realized that he had no choice but to tell the police everything. If only he had been more careful with that chainsaw, if he had just done what he asked, instead of trying to get rich.

He might have had more time.

When his wife died in childbirth, taking the child she was carrying with her, Franck hadn't understood. He remembered refusing with all his might what had happened. What he couldn't remember was how he had come to kidnap unknown women to replace her. How could he have believed for a second that he could replace her?

No one could replace her.

He was stupidly deluded. All these women, who made her feel like she was still there, were just pale substitutes. He had wasted so much time chasing this chimera that thinking about it made himself ridiculous. It was all over now.

And then he was still thinking of her.

This girl. The last one he had chased, the one that had given him so much trouble. He had enjoyed chasing her around town, as much as he had enjoyed watching her change in her car in this traffic jam.
