Chapter 1

One month.

It had been one month since Holly had disappeared, without a trace. She had just left a letter that Buck had made him read. He had engraved every syllable of it in his memory.

All that pain, which emanated from that letter, still upset him, but it was nothing compared to the pain Buck was feeling.

He had been looking for her diligently, the first two weeks of her disappearance. Knocking on every door, questioning station and airport staff. Athena herself had done discreet research, but had found no trace of her. Buck had distributed leaflets, put up posters, but nothing came of it.

Then he had started to sink.

For almost three weeks, his best friend had been destroying himself. He fought in bars and drank excessively. This love he felt for his wife was so strong that it gnawed at him inexorably.

As he left, Holly had crushed him.

Buck didn't deserve this. He was a nice guy, but there was nothing left of that man. Buck had become a zombie. If only Holly had given him time to answer her questions, if she had given him a chance to defend his love, he would have convinced her to stay.

But she had run away.

And now she was standing there, standing in his kitchen, more beautiful than ever. She had let down her long brown hair, which fell to her shoulders and her hazel eyes watched him with slight anxiety. She wore fitted jeans and a crop top under a caramel leather jacket.

She seemed to be fine, to have recovered from the separation much better than Buck had been able to. Did she realize she was hurting him?

He doubted it but Eddie was determined to make her understand that between her and his best friend, he had already chosen his side.

Eddie was a dark-skinned thirty-five-year-old man. He sported short cropped brown hair and brown eyes. He was a little taller than Holly and square-shouldered.

– You're going to tell me where you've been? he asked dryly, his arms crossed over his chest. Or are we gonna keep looking each other in the eye?

Holly took it without flinching.

She knew she was no longer welcome, but she needed Eddie. She had finally made a decision.

She didn't know if she would have the courage to tell him the real reason for her presence, but she had a second good reason for being there, and she needed him.
