Prologue

To survive.

Sometimes it's a matter of luck, but most of the time it's a matter of temperament. You have to fight, not accept fate, and strike before being struck.

Chapter 1

Buck woke up with a start.

He always felt like his wife was going to be home any minute. She had been missing for two weeks already. She had told him to forget her, as if it were possible to forget the most beautiful moments of his life.

He was going through a nightmare.

He got up and went to the bathroom. He looked at his reflection in the mirror. He had become a wreck, unshaven, with dull eyes. He understood that Holly had run away from him, he didn't look like anything anymore.

He had spent the weekend putting up posters with Holly's picture. He had traveled all over the city looking for her, without success. Bobby had helped him navigate the streets, Athena had tried to locate her, but Holly had emptied her bank accounts and fled, leaving no trace.

Legally, nothing prevented her from doing so and that was the hardest part. Holly hadn't disappeared. She had just left him. She had gone to hide as far away from him as possible.

It had to come from him.

He had made a mistake. He shouldn't have tried to force her to go to the clinic, it was like confinement. With her claustrophobia, she could never have taken it.

But what was he thinking?

He had left thousands of messages on her voicemail, asking her to come back, telling her he loved her, so much so that he had saturated her answering machine.

He was pathetic.

Anyway, she had turned off her phone. No one could locate her. Athena had explained to him that Holly had decided to disappear on her own and that she therefore couldn't launch a search. He had a hard time taking it.

Bobby too.

He had seen it in his eyes. That was why he followed him on his expeditions through the city to try to find her. They spent all their free time there. This event had the merit of bursting the abscess between them but Buck was careful not to let Bobby approach him too closely. He might end up convincing him to forget about Holly.

He refused it with all his might.

It was impossible for him to forget the only person who could love him for who he was, without conditions. The only one besides Maddie but she was his sister, that didn't count.

Not the same way.

He straightens up when he heard the doorbell ring and went to open it. He still had this crazy hope that it was her. He knew she wouldn't come back. She had been quite clear in her letter, but until he received the divorce papers, he continued to hope.
