Chapter 1

Bobby gave his directions.

He was a man in his early fifties. He was tall, had a short haircut and a square face. He was the fire captain of the one-eighteen Los Angeles Brigade. He was even a father to each of its members, having sometimes an advisory role, sometimes a role of educator for the young mad dogs he commanded.

Since his arrival, he had taken under his wing the youngest of them, Evan Buckley, nicknamed Buck, who never missed an opportunity to throw himself headlong into all the slightly daredevil missions they encountered. But he had to admit that the young man had changed a lot for several months, since he had met his daughter, since he had married her.

He was tall and sported a very muscular build.

He almost always kept a small, ironic smile. He was blond with blue eyes and had a birthmark above his left eye. He had confessed to him several times that he thought of him as his father, but Bobby had a hard time admitting that he was also a son to him.

He hadn't even told him that he was actually him son-in-law, but he had planned to tell Holly and him everything as soon as his shift ended. It was high time that his daughter knew the truth and that each of them could take their rightful place.

– There are more and more firebox, Buck called to him. Like adding fuel instead of water.

The fire was, indeed, more and more dense and they struggled to control it. Three units were present on the scene but there was nothing to do, the more they sprayed the more it burned.

– It looks like the fire moves by sliding, Hen said suddenly.

She was an African-American in her forties, a good friend of Athena. She had done a medical course in which she had excelled, before deciding that it wasn't for her.

She loved her job as a first aider and had come back.

They suddenly looked at each other and understood at the same time. Bobby stopped the water nozzles and radioed for dry ice to slow the progress of the fire. Buck was preparing to enter but Bobby suspended operations.

– You have to come in Cap, there are people inside, the young man reminded him.

– I know, but the water makes the situation worse. If we continue the fire will spread to the buildings next door.

– How about we go through the building next door, Buck suggested.

– What do you have in mind?
