Prologue
On holidays, people are happy and make concessions that they wouldn't otherwise.
Festivities tend to relax people, make them more receptive to forgiveness and more inclined to share in simple pleasures.
Chapter 1
Holly was feeling good.
For two months, she had been dating Buck, she was finally calm and ready to resume her life. All the tests she had taken were working in her favor. The police captain was just waiting for the green light from the psychologist.
She had put in a lot of effort.
She saw the shrink weekly, attended veterans meetings twice a week, went to the shooting range, and had returned to the sport.
The rest of her time was divided between reviewing the intervention code, studying the city maps, visiting Christopher and nights with Buck.
She would join her lover almost every night but still hadn't said anything to her brother. Her visits to the fire station were becoming increasingly rare.
She and Buck were drawn like two magnets every time they were in the same room, and Bobby could figure out what was going on between them too quickly. The young woman didn't want him to try to separate them.
She refused it.
Buck hugged her a little tighter. He nestled his nose in her hair and took a deep breath. God, he loved that shampoo smell, which she gave out with every movement.
Her long brown hair was now scattered over the pillow and her small aquiline nose rested against his chest. Buck was having fun counting her multiple freckles. They stood out against her diaphanous skin, which made her even more beautiful. She was of average height, quite athletic, and he felt her breasts harden against his skin.
He felt her move and pulled away slightly, with a smile.
– Hello, he whispered.
Buck was a tall man with developed muscles. He had short blond hair and a birthmark above his left eyelid.
Holly stroked one of the tattoos on the younger man's arm with her fingertip.
– What time is it? she inquired.
– Still too early to get out of bed.
– Liar, she reproached him.
– I'm too good here.
– But you'll start in less than an hour, she blurted out, looking at the time on her phone.
– Oh then, I still have enough time, he said, kissing her.
