Chapter 1

When Athena arrived in the kitchen, she immediately understood that something was wrong.

Her husband Bobby was scrubbing a spotlessly clean counter. He even obsessed over a non-existent task.

Bobby was a man in his fifties. Tall and square-shouldered, he sported dark colored hair and hazel eyes. Fire captain of the one-eighteen brigade of Los Angeles, he had met his wife a few years earlier on an criminal fire and had ended up falling in love. They had married over two years ago and he didn't regret it. Since then, he had found his eldest daughter, had married her to one of his men and they were going to give birth to his first grandchild.

Everything was going well in his life but yet he was upset.

She put her hands on her hips, determined to make him spill the beans on what was bothering him.

– If the goal is to make it disappear under wear, it will be easier with acid, she let go.

Bobby turned around, surprised at the intervention.

His wife looked at him with an amused glint in her eyes. Mostly because he was frozen in the middle of the kitchen, the sponge in one hand and the degreasing spray in the other.

Athena was in her fifties and very athletic. She had a deep, very recognizable voice. She was an African-American who sported a short haircut, so as not to be embarrassed in her work. She had been in the police since the beginning of her career and had reached the rank of sergeant for several years already.

Her husband sighed when he realized she was right.

It was really a very bad habit to go after housework when it wasn't going well or because he was wondering.

- It's..., he began. It calms me down.

- What puts you in this state?

- I'm worried about Holly, he admitted, putting his hygienic weapons on the counter.

- You're still worried about Holly.

Bobby had to admit she was right.

But it was stronger than him. Holly had suffered enough. He felt it was time for her to be happy.

- Is it because she sees her mother? she inquired.

- I can't help but tell myself that something is going to go wrong, he confirmed. That they're going to fight or even worse, that she's going to get attached.
