Jewel's Point of View
I looked outside the mouth of the cave, watching the ran pour outside and drip off the overhang. I could smell the rain, and Bolta had his nose in the air, so he must be smelling something more important than rain.
I looked at him, wondering what it was, when he stood up, barking. I stood up and went over to him, putting my hand on his shoulder.
"What is it Bolta?" I asked, trying to see if I could see anything through the rain that might make Bolta suspicious.
His hackles raised, and he growled, still staring straight ahead. I sighed and went to the back of the cave, leaning against the wall. It was dark, and I was hoping the rain would stop while I slept. I was so sick of the rain. It'd been raining for a few days, and I needed to go hunting.
My belly rumbled, reminding me that I hadn't eaten today. It was to cold, and if I got wet, I could freeze. And then even Artemis or Bolta couldn't help me. I would be on my own, and soon freeze, Bolta freezing with me.
I closed my eyes, starting to drift off to the sound of the rain beating against the rocks.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I awoke with a start. It was still dark, so I couldn't have slept anymore than a few hours. I looked around for the familiar white coat of Bolta.
"That silly wolf." I mumbled, seeing him laying across the entrance, asleep. I stood up and walked over to him and sat down next to him, gently stroking him, the only being other than my mothers, that I'd grown attached to.
"I wish you would come visit me." I mumbled, sending silent prayer to Artemis. It could be lonely here sometimes, especially since I couldn't talk with Bolta.
Not that I disliked him. No, I loved Bolta. He was my life, my family, my brother. His mom had saved me, raising me when Artemis couldn't escape from her duties on Mount Olympus.
Myy heart ached when I thought of when I'd found her last. She had died under a fallen tree. She had almost looked like she was just sleeping, if you didn't notice how her back was almost twisted around. That was seven years ago.
I closed my eyes, remembering the storm, one much like the one going on right now.
Flashback
A younger Jewel sits under a tree, watching the darkness for the mother wolf to return. The rain pours heavily, soaking everything in seconds.
A large bolt of lightning breaks the sky in half, followed by a clap of thunder. Jewel yelps, scrambling back against the tree. A padding of feet, followed by a wet nose comes. Jewel stiffens for a moment before she recognizes Bolta's scent.
She exhales, not knowing that she'd held her breath. She wanted desperately for the storm to end, for Bolta's mother, her foster mother to return so they could go back into the den and wait for the storm to end.
A thud shudders the ground, causing Bolta to yelp. A high pitched howl follows, filled with pain.
Jewel jumps to her feet. '"Mom?" She called. She would knowing that howl anywhere. She waited silently, waiting for another howl, one that never came.
Flashback Over
This storm was so similar. The only difference was that I wasn't waiting for a mother that would never come back.
I was fifteen, and with that came fifteen years worth of knowledge. I knew that mortal men were evil, wanting just to control what they see. Never reveal myself. You never know who are demigods, and who will see the resemblance between Artemis and I.
My hand started to slow again as my eyelids became heavy. I wanted to stay awake, not wanting nightmares to come. I wanted to stay awake and wait for the rain to stop, so I could go hunting.
I thought I could hear footsteps, but that was impossible. Who else would be dumb enough to be here in the rain instead of in a home?
I peered out into the rain, and sure enough, there wasn't anyone walking around.
Jewel, calm down. It's just a thunderstorm. And Bolta's in here, he's not in danger.
I laid back down and closed my eye, feeling Bolta's soft fur against my skin.
========================================================
I know this chapter may be confusing, but hang in there. It will be explained through out the story.
And, yes, Bota's a wolf, and his picture is at the top.
