To prevent making things awkward, Matt and Alex were civil with each other and acted like they did before they began dating. They didn't want to put their friends or the twins in a position that no one wanted.
"Is everything okay between you and Alex?" Jack asked Matt as the two headed over to the basketball court.
They told Justin, Evan, Zack and Cody to meet them there.
"Yeah," Matt lied, "why wouldn't it be?"
"Look, man," Jack said.
He stopped Matt from walking.
"Matt, you're my best friend," Jack reminded Matt. "I care about you. You can talk to me."
"It's just..." Matt looked away from Jack for a moment, but looked back at him. "I love Alex, but..."
Jack raised his eyebrows.
"She deserves better," Matt said. "She doesn't deserves a guy who wouldn't lie to her or keep secrets."
"This all could've been prevented if you told her you're a werewolf," Jack said.
"How can I?" Matt said. "She already hates me for keeping secrets from her. I don't know if I want to know how she'd react if she found out..."
"Okay, man, you're just being stupid," Jack said. "Alex wouldn't care that you're a werewolf. She will love you regardless. And she doesn't hate you."
"Sure, she doesn't," Matt rolled his eyes.
Jack gave Matt a look.
"Matt, that's all in your head," Jack said. "Trust me, she's still in love with you."
Matt shook his head.
"After how I treated her, I doubt she does," Matt shook his head.
Matt heard laughing in the distance. He looked over Jack's shoulders to see Alex laughing someone.
Jack looked back to see Alex laughing with someone.
Jack turned back to Matt to see the expression on his face.
"Okay, that was bad timing," Jack said.
"Back timing or not, she looks happier," Matt said. "She looks happier without me."
"Matt -" Jack began.
"I'll see you later," Matt said. "I'll meet you, Evan and Zack at the basketball court."
"Matt, wait -"
Mat left Jack and went home.
Jack attempted to stop him from leaving and tried to persuade him to join him, Evan and Zack for lunch than basketball, but Matt wouldn't listen.
When Matt got home, he went up to his bedroom and jumped onto his bed. He didn't bother turning on the lights.
He rested his chin on his pillow for a few seconds before Matt turned onto his back and picked up a picture of him and his friends.
The picture was taken before he was attacked, before Jack left for the S.S Tipton. It was taken when Matt was happy, a time where Matt felt like he belonged somewhere. It was a picture of Matt, Jack, Justin, Alex and Rose.
The Matt in the picture looked so much happier. The Matt in the picture looked like he actually belonged in the group. He looked like he was perfectly content with life.
Now... he's not so sure anymore. He doesn't know anything anymore.
With his monthly transformations, he might not be able to have a normal job in the mortal world. He might have to get a new job every couple of months because he will be missing work from his transformation.
