Request: Emil x Fem! Reader? ... the only characteristic I would like the reader to have is shyness. After arriving at the asylum, you did everything you could to get away from the people, doctors and patients alike. They made you nervous; they scared you. You felt as though they were always watching, waiting for you to mess up in front of them so they could ridicule you for your mistakes. Until you discovered a loose brick in your chambers, your room was your safe space. Now, though, the space behind the walls was your safe space. You could venture through the asylum all you wanted from the comfort of a narrow and dark hall that kept you safely isolated.
Nobody was knowledgeable on your whereabouts. They rarely even noticed you were out of your room. At the asylum, there was just too much for the workers to worry about. A small, fragile girl like you was basically invisible. You didn't mind this, though. It made escaping for awhile easier, and you didn't like it when people paid attention to you.
The other patients in the asylum noticed a bit more. They never saw where you went off to, but they'd often ask questions after you came back. You always did your best to ignore them, feigning mute as you always did. It was better that they didn't know, at least for your sake. You didn't want anybody trying to follow you or rat out your business to the staff. Besides, you didn't like talking to people any more than you liked their eyes on you. The patients in the asylum were especially difficult. They never made much sense, except for one.
That one was Emil. You very rarely saw each other, as you were typically not in the same area as the asylum, but sometimes, you passed one another in the hall. He was always with a woman therapist that you didn't know. There were never words exchanged, but the gentle, reassuring smile on his face always seemed to calm you down before the treatments began. He was your rock in this uncertain place.
One night, as you were out exploring on your rounds, you decided to go further than you'd gone before. There was short staff, so you didn't need to worry about anybody finding your empty bed. Sleep wasn't coming easy, and you hoped that walking around for awhile would be able to lull your insomnia away. The closer you got to unexplored areas, the more the walls began to crumble away, and finally, you came to a room with a gaping hole. You'd never considered the possibility that you could escape through your hidden hideaway, but now, a plan was forming.
As you stood there behind the wall, formulating your escape plan, something in the room stirred, startling you. The figure laying in bed nearly screamed. It was Emil, with his hair a mess from his pillow and you could barely make out his features in the darkness, but you knew him well enough to tell he was the one you'd stumbled upon.
"It's me," You finally whispered, leaning out the hole to show him your face in the moonlight. He seemed stunned, which wasn't surprising. He'd never heard your voice before; none of the other patients had. Glancing over his shoulder to make sure a guard wasn't near, he tiptoed over to the hole and put his hands on the wall at either side of your face.
"Your voice is pretty."
Your face flushed, and you glanced away. "Well, yes.. I.. I want to say goodbye properly, Emil. I'm going today. I'm going to find a way out of here."
"Are you sure?" He asked, inquisitive, "Do you know that it's safe?"
You nodded softly, fidgeting with your hair. "Yes," You murmured, "Quite."
He took your hand and kissed the top of it, sending butterflies through your stomach. "I have a plan of my own," He replied, "But I'll find you once I escape. I promise." Offering a gentle smile, you nodded once more. And for the final time, the two of you exchanged a smile under the asylum's roof.
