Jay's POV
My office door is thrown open by some of the men I sent to watch Dawn a month or two ago. They glare at my harshly, looking ready to kill. "What do you want?" I snort, taking a long drink of the best whiskey I've ever tasted.
"You bastard." Caelian spits, walking over and punching me. Hard. My head whips to the side from the force. Fair enough.
"She's crying herself to sleep every night. She barely eats. And when she does, we notice her walking straight to the fucking bathroom to throw it all up. She holes herself up in her stupid bedroom, barely talks, and sends her siblings back to her family practically every other weekend! And you just sit here, high up on your imaginary throne, feeling so happy that you broke up with her. She's the best you'll ever have, you fucking ignorant ass!" He screams in my face. I nod to the door, ignoring their looks of shock.
"Close the door on your way out." I sigh, looking back down at my paperwork.
"Don't you care? That your number one priority, the love of your life, your goddamn soulmate, is suffering because of you?" Caelian asks in disbelief, I shrug.
"Why should I? She's safe, isn't she? That's why I hired you for the job." I look at them, praying that my face was still just as impassive as it once was before they came in here. "Oh, and I have a new assignment for you." I say, writing it down on a quick piece of paper and putting an envelope inside it as I fold the piece of paper in half.
"Read it in a secure place. Make sure it's just you and no one may see or know about it." I say, handing him a piece of paper despite the gut feeling that I shouldn't. His eyebrows furrow, but he nods and walks out with the rest of his team following.
I knew what it said, and I hoped that they understood my message clearly. It wasn't exactly in any kind of code, but I just hoped that they wouldn't tell anyone what it said.
I finish up my days work, heading back to my empty mansion and going straight to bed. I lie awake all night, thinking about her. She was safe right? I know they told me what was going on with her, and I just hoped they read my message in time to save her. If only there was a way around this. But I promised to keep her safe. I promised to protect her. And she wasn't going to get hurt because of me.
As I stared up at the blank ceiling, in that cold, lonely bed, with nothing but a heavy sadness on my heart, I heard a knock on my front door. I slide out of bed, walking down the large stairs. Lights clicking on with just a clap of my hands. I open the door, knowing that the guards would never have let whoever was at the door through the five levels of security if they didn't trust them.
Caelian pushes into my home, no one but him at my door. I close the door, watching him as he paces in front of me. Waving the piece of paper and envelope in my face, his eyes were red with anger.
"You want me to do what? You want me to pretend like you never gave me this, explaining everything that could keep her alive and never tell her why you truly left her. She's starving herself every day! She's slowly becoming mute! She doesn't even make dinner or anything anymore! She barely takes a shower, and Elliot and Elijah have to cuddle her to sleep as she cries every night. She asks us to promise that we won't leave her every two fucking days because she's terrified that we'll leave her like you left her." He yells in my face, his chest heaving as he stares at me in pure anger.
"It's the only way. She has to be protected. Until I can find him and murder him and get rid of his stupid gang, then she has to think I don't love her. She has to be put aside. I have to put my feelings aside, Caelian!" I mutter under my breath, but I knew the place wasn't bugged. I had a perfect system installed where any mics or recorders that are put in here, are terminated within two seconds.
"Please, make sure she eats. Make sure she gets better. Tell her I said to move on. Anything, just make sure she gets better." I whisper, turning away from him as I shut myself down once again. He spins me around, eyes burning furiously with a fire that could burn hell.
"Why?" He asks me, just like she did.
"Because he almost fucking killed her! I swore that I would protect her. And the only way to do that, is to make everyone in this world believe that I fucking hate her and she means nothing to me. You don't think I'm in pain? Believe me, boy, I'm in so much fucking pain. She doesn't deserve this life, and I want you, once the coast is clear, to take her and run. I've already assigned other men to each of her family and friends. They'll be taken to different parts of the world to be kept safe. I should have this problem done and over with by the end of the school year. Just give her my present for Christmas and say it's from you." I yell, turning back away from him as tears begin to cloud my eyes.
"Just leave. I'll send a text once the coast is clear to take her away. Just go back and force some fucking food down her throat. Just promise me you'll take care of her." I whisper, he sighs from behind me.
"Yes, sir." I hear the front door open and then slam shit behind him as he leaves. The words I wrote down on that paper echo around my head, but I force them from my thoughts and head back to bed. Another night alone.
