I stop in my tracks. Taking in the sight in front of me. I knew that Fjerdan soldiers were here. Killed two of them not too long ago.

"I'm arresting you for treason," the Drüskelle commands.

"I'm not going to hurt you," Matthias says.

I notice the boy's hand move slightly. Enough to ready the gun.

He's going to kill Matthias...

I took off towards the Drüskelle. Every bit of common sense leaves my body. He turns to look at the weird sound running towards him, but in the blink of an eye I'm tackling him to the ground.

The gun landing a couple paces away from both of us. The Drüskelle pushes me off him, heading for the gun. I grabbed his wrist before he could grab it.

He turns over and punches me in the cheek with his free hand. I tighten my grip on his wrist as pain radiates on my face.

He punches me again, this time his fist connects with my jaw. My grip loosens as black spots enter my vision. I blink them away, rubbing my jaw.

As they leave my vision, I notice the Drüskelle holding the gun out towards me. His back turned to Matthias.

"Sten," the Drüskelle commands.

I look at Matthias, he is slowly walking towards the boy. Making sure not to make any noise. Distract him.

"You don't have to do this," I say. "Do you want to be branded as a murderer?"

"You are traitors to your own," he spits.

Matthias already tried to change this boy's mind. Our country's beliefs and values are forever rooted into his mind. If he isn't willing to listen, he will end up a slave to Djel for eternity.

"What's your name?" I ask. The Drüskelle looks shocked. I take a small step forward.

"Sten," he says.

I stop, holding my hands above my head. Matthias is still creeping up behind the boy. Only a couple feet more and the boy will be disarmed. We will have a moment to run.

Matthias's arms wrap around the Drüskelle. They struggle back and forth. For being half Matthias's height, the Drüskelle was good at defending himself.

They struggle against one another. The gun in the boy's hand being the main focus of the fight.

Matthias was so close to grabbing the gun. Only a couple more moves and he would have it.

Until, a gun shot rings throughout the night air. At first I didn't understand what happened, but then I felt it. Sharp pain entering the left side of my stomach.

Reaching down, my fingers touch something hot and wet. Something that I've felt more times than I wanted too.

Blood.

The Drüskelle shot me.
