"There you are! Was beginning to think I wouldn't see ya before dark." Davey called from a corner table in the deli. The atmosphere was quite, as rush wouldn't come for another hour, and it suited the newsies just fine.

Jack chuckled lightly, "woulda been on time if someone," he poked Siren, "hadn't taken so long ta sell ha last pape."

"I did just fine, thank you very much," Siren tried really hard to look all haughty, but just couldn't a straight face, and began to laugh with the boys.

"Where's Les at? Ain't seen 'im 'ere yet" Jack asked looking around the small dining area.

"Oh I took him home," Davey waved off, "just wanted to hang with the guys without having to watch him all night." He paused slightly, "or well, I guess guy and girl, the others not coming?"

Jack shrugged nonchalantly, though his enthusiasm dropped a little, "some days dey come, some days dey dont. We ain't too borin a company, are we?"

Davey seemed to catch on and wildly shook his head and hands. "Of course not! I love hanging out with you, Jack! A-and Siren, though I can't say I know you all that well."

"We can change dat real quick." She said with a smile.

An hour passed too quickly for the trio as they were wrapped in conversation and laughter. Before they knew it, they were ushered out so the "payin' customers got somewhere to sit". That didn't stop them, as they just wandered about, talking and laughing as if they've known each other for a life time.

"Y'know, turns out Si here didn't know we had us a strike," Jack threw an arm around Siren's shoulder while looking at Davey, then turning to her, "di'ja'know Davey was a strike leada too? More like da only leada, everything was 'is idea and he really lead da strike in da end. 'E's the real hero 'ere. I went and got my ass flipped ova by some crack pot deal I's made wit Pulitza." Jack looked at the ground solumly.

"Hey," Davey's voice was soft as he clasped Jack's shoulder, "had you not made that deal, we wouldn't have been able to use that old printer you found, and get that final push we needed to win. You're just as much a leader and a hero as I am." He spoke with such sincerity and held such an intense gaze with Jack that Siren felt she was intruding on a really private moment. After a minute of this silent conversation the boys seemed to be having, Siren cleared her thoat to end the engulfing silence. That finally broke their concentration, and they too recovered from whatever they just shared.

"What makes you bring up the strike anyhow?" Davey asked, also clearing his thoat.

Jack rubbed his neck in nervousness, "oh, uh, Si was askin 'bout it earlia. Saw a bit in d'papes about some anniversary of the strike. Turns out Kath wrote it and sent it in."

Davey's head perked up at that, "oh how nice, I hope she's doing well. We outta go see her soon."

"Dat's what 'e said," Siren joined in, "man she must be real swell if ya both are just ichin ta go see 'er."

Jack smiled, "oh all us newsies are, she was one a'us, parta da family, y'know?"

"I's can imagine," she chuckled lightly before a yawn overtook her.

"Yeesh, it's gettin kinda late aint it? Shoulda brought ya back sooner, you still needs ya rest." Jack fussed, despite Siren swatting him away. He and Davey exchanged parting words and waved goodbye, and Jack held Siren by his side as they walked back to the lodge house.

I had more for this story but I quit writing it months ago and now the hyper fixation is gone and I don't wanna continue it. Good thing that's the point of this book :)
