It started small, as everything did. They were a secret, as they didn't want to disrupt the family unit between the kids and the adults weren't the most welcoming. They spent their time late at night under the covers, holding each other dearly and speaking softly. Night became a time for tender touches and promises to always be with each other and stolen kisses. But for every stolen kiss in the night there was an interrupted sentence, for every loving embrace there was a harsh push away, every gentle caress of her face came with a grab of her butt she didn't expect, or really want. They started as little things, and like most little things, they went unnoticed or were brushed off.

Until it couldn't be anymore.

Interrupted sentences began being followed by harsh whispers and even harsher words. Each shove got stronger, until shoving wasn't good enough. A light grab that started as a tease grew more impatient, more forceful and demanding. Before long every inch of her belonged to Emily, and she hated it. But she could handle it, because she loved Emily more.

At least, she thought she did.

She thought Emily did too.

Emily got worse, and in turn so did she. But no one would notice, as they long suspected their relationship and figured it was a part of the act to keep them from knowing the truth. That, and Emily was good at faking, and she was good at hiding. She became great at makeup, because she wanted Emily to think she was pretty, and she couldn't be pretty with all those bruises. She became quick witted and silver tongued, her comebacks biting and deep, for she learned from the best. Her strength was unparalleled to the others, for she needed to toughen up against her tough lover. Everything she did was for Emily, but never once did she acknowledge that it was only because of Emily that she needed to do so.

But months passed, and in turn brought in weekends of adoption housings, hopeful parents and partners in search of a new addition to their families. She usually didn't go, using the time to hide away with Emily. But this time they went, and she wishes she hadn't.

It wasn't long before she lost Emily in the crowd, and so she waited along the wall. Eyes dressed in their Sunday best flickered and stared in her direction, some pitied, some sneered, and others were indifferent. None of them met her with the same light that came with finding Their Kid, nor did she expect them to, but she couldn't shake a bad feeling. She wanted Emily to get back so she could get away from so many prying eyes.

Her wish was granted, but with an awful turn of fate.

Emily strutted across the room, parting the crowd like waves, only to come to a cool halt in front of her, the light flowery scent of her signature perfume filling her senses. Emily told her it was expensive, but she'd found it at a Walgreens and tried to buy it for her once. Emily didn't say thank you for the gift, but rather yelled at her for figuring out her lie, insisting that its not the same despite the indistinguishable smell. She must've been lost in that because Emily had to snap her fingers to get her attention again.

"I've got some news, we should go somewhere private."

She nodded, and Emily snuck her out the back, and walked quickly to a nearby open space. Wide open meadows of tall yellow grass and clear blue skies, a wonderful spot for such a warm sunny day.

"So I talked with some people," Emily started, as she listened intently, "and they decided that I would be a good fit for them."

A beat of silence.

"Like, they think I'm the one for them."

Her face fell, the silence continued.

"God, are you daft? I got adopted, for fucks sake, at least pretend to be happy for me."
