She was beautiful. Her reddish auburn hair that bounced with natural volume, her heart shaped face was free of blemishes and always had perfect subtle make up. She was a little older, and had a perfect hourglass figure and tanned skin. She walked with such confidence, and her striking blue eyes pierced into anyone she looked at and kept them hooked. She was a mortal Aphrodite, and she knew it.
No one really trusted her at first, she was too perfect for an orphan, and too closely resembled someone who would or had hurt some of them in the past. But she didn't let those thoughts stop her as she welcomed the new girl.
"Hey there! Welcome to the orphanage, what's your name?" She smiled and held out her hand to shake.
The new girl did a once over, an expression she couldn't decipher spread across her face, then smiled and shook back.
"My name's Emily."
And she was screwed.
Slowly everyone got used to Emily, she wasn't necessarily part of the family yet, but she could be. She, however, was falling head over heels the longer she got to spend time with Emily. Everyone, especially the little boys, would tease her about her crush when Emily wasn't around, and she'd get flustered and tell them to shut up. She never got the courage to tell Emily anything about it though, so she just stuck to being a friend.
Then it happened.
Emily had awoken her in the middle of the night, saying she had a bad dream and didn't want to be alone. She let her crawl into her bunk, and they cuddled under the thin blankets for a while. Then they got to whispering when sleep wouldn't take them, and she spoke a little too much.
"Well when you came here at first, no one was really sure what to make of you because you were so pretty-"
"You think I'm pretty?" Emily asked.
She blushed a little and started to ramble, "of course you're pretty, everything about you is absolutely gorgeous. And that's probably why no one trusted you at first, but I saw you and immediately felt drawn to you so I wanted to give you a chance and I was right because you're really awesome and-"
"Do you like me?"
She stopped, her mouth frozen in an unsaid word. Then she shut it and began to blush furiously. She tripped over some incomprehensible words and fiddled with her hands, looking anywhere but in Emily's vibrant blue eyes, who in turn only stared back in expectancy. Then, no longer able to wait for her to figure out what to say, Emily leaned in and kissed her. It was slow and soft, perfect for the situation, and left her breathless. Emily drew back, leaving her lips cold, and snuggled up even closer than before. Once her racing heart calmed, they fell into a peaceful sleep.
She wishes she could go back to that night.
Maybe do something different, maybe she'd fake being asleep until Emily left, or didn't say anything about her crush, or pushed her away when they kissed. Maybe then things could've been different.
Maybe then Emily wouldn't have become her worst nightmare.
