Eyes Of A Rookie (Infinite and Rookie)

Chapter 25

Holding Asteroid tight in my hand and glancing over as Sonic, he patted my shoulder in cooperation and teammates as Infinite loomed above us, about double his original size. I knew it was the Phantom Ruby causing his illusion of larger size, but I knew underneath it all stood someone filled with fear. Filled with doubt, filled with... the love that nobody else could feel. I felt my sins crawl on my back as I shut my eyes and calmed my rapid breathing, trying not to show fear of the Jackal.

Infinite: You are the most repugnant creatures I've ever laid eye on. Your resistance is futile. You do not have the strength nor mastery of weaponry that I do.

Sonic: I don't NEED weapons to defeat even the mightiest of foes I have. Except for the whole Were-Hog thing, but that's besides the point.

Me: This isn't gonna end will, is it, Zero?

Infinite: You do not need to know that, but for now... it is time for your demise.

My Wolf senses tingled rather violently, the first time they had in a while. Basically what hair standing on ends was, a stimulus of extreme feelings that cause the sensation. Case in point, as soon as I looked behind me, the biggest threat to me was not that Infinite was TRYING to kill us, but the SWARM of red cubes behind us would. I felt something grip my arm, and before I knew it, I was running down a long straightaway next to Sonic, chasing after the Jackal.

I felt the rush of adrenaline dodging every illusion Infinite launched at me and the spiky blue hedgehog while we kept the pace of him levitating away from us. To Sonic, I could see it as a chase after the villain, but to me, it was chasing... love. I could feel my heart pound out of my chest, both because of the high amount of physical endurance I was doing AND the fact I was chasing Infinite. He was my favorite, and ONLY, Jackal I've ever felt like I could relate to.

As soon as I felt Sonic grip my wrist, I knew what needed to be done. Jumping in the air with him and initiating the world-renowned Double Boost, I ran alongside the speedy hedgehog as the Jackal kept rapidly levitating backwards. But, we were faster and bowled through him like a professional bowls a 300-game.

As Infinite fell to the ground like a brick off a chimney, I skidded to a stop as Sonic kept running along the rest of the path before he jumped off the side and hurried back to the Fortress. I didn't know why, until static in my earpiece caught my attention. Taking my earpiece off and tapping it on my hand, all I heard was static, until a voice rang through it.

Taylor: Hey, Gadget, are you still dealing with Infinite with Sonic?

Me: We just finished up here. He just took off to the Fortress, anyone know why?

Daniel: Amy debriefed us that the other Sonic found an entrance, he's probably- GODDAMN CLONE!! Anyways, Sonic's probably heading there. Are you not with him?

Me: I got something to take care of. Someone needs to go with him.

Luna: Okay, I got it. You guys just protect yourselves on the outside. Sonic, I'm right by the entrance, you'll meet me there.

Sonic: Copy that, Night. I'll be there in... right now.

Amy: You'll only have one shot at destroying the reactor. Give it all you've got.

Shutting my earpiece off and setting it back in my ear, I stepped over to the kneeled Jackal and held his shoulder. One glance back was all it took for him to turn almost berserk with rage. Shoving me off him and pulling his crimson sword from his back, I gripped Asteroid tighter and stepped back as Infinite slowly approached.

Infinite: Do you not know... what it's like... to lose everything you've ever loved? WHAT DO YOU EVEN CARE ABOUT WITH ME?? WHY DO YOU THINK YOU CAN SAVE ME??
