Jewel's POV
A low knock comes to my door after night has fallen. I take my time answering it, not wanting to seem anxious.
I'm greeted with a wide smile from Ryan. A tiny part of me hoped to see Eric's evil smirk instead. Why?
"Would you like to come in or should we go out?" I ask. He extends his hand out and pulls me through the door. "Let's go out."
We walk side by side in a comfortable silence for a few moments until he speaks up, finally. "You made a good choice. To be my assistant. Eric can be hard to deal with." He says it so casually.
"Were you in the same initiation class as him?" I look at Ryan, through a side ways glance. He seems older than Eric.
He shakes his head. "No. I was a year before him. It doesn't matter, though. He's still difficult."
Curiosity is getting the best of me. "What makes him difficult?"
Ryan breathes through his nose and shrugs his shoulders. "Everything. His attitude is horrible. He's constantly trying to start confrontation. And to top things off, he fucked my sister."
I stop dead in my tracks. "Excuse me?" I say, horrified. Why am I even bothered by this? I gather myself together and continue walking again. "I'm sorry. I mean, when did that happen? Who is your sister?"
Ryan let's out a laugh. "Curious are we? My sister transferred last year. To Erudite. But Eric got to her before she left. It was awful. There was a pregnancy scare but that turned out to be just a false alarm, thank goodness. So much drama, honestly. After that, she transferred and I decided it best not to be around Dauntless headquarters too much. So that's why I'm at the fence."
We had made our way outside at some point in the conversation and were now standing close to the railroad tracks. Cold wind blew into my face making me shiver. Ryan noticed and slipped off his jacket.
"Take this." He hands it to me. I take it, graciously. "Thank you."
The jacket is about two sizes too big for me but the material is warm inside and I'm no longer chilly.
"So getting to work stuff, you would basically just do paper work in my office. I can send you messages through a tablet that will be given to you and we will communicate back and forth on a regular bases about activity around the fence. Nothing fancy but you will be of great help." He rubs his hands together and fills his cheeks with air.
I look up at the sky and notice all the stars. So many, tonight. Somehow I stepped closer to Ryan and our arms are touching. He lightly puts an arm around my shoulder and turns his head down towards me. "Thank you by the way."
I smile up at him. "No problem."
Heey!! So what do you guys think so far?? Sorry that there wasn't any Eric in this chapter but we did find out some juicy details!! Eric slept with Ryan's sister!! How do you think Jewel feels? And what about Ryan? Is he just being friendly or maybe flirty??
