Jewel's POV
I turn around to see dark brown eyes staring down at me. A flood of memories hits me all at one time.
His name is Robert. He was a couple of years older than me and had transferred to Amity from Erudite just two years before I left for Dauntless. My mother was a widow and took a special liking to him for some reason. I didn't question her about it because I thought that maybe she was just lonely.
But when I realized that my mom was pursuing a relationship with him, things took a turn for the worst. Robert began staying the night with us and I tried so hard to block out the sounds they made together in the middle of the night. It disgusted me.
One day, though, while I was working in the fields, he came up to me and began speaking to me in such a way that made my blood curdle. He said that he would take me as his, that my innocence would be lost to him. I was terrified. When I told my mom about it, she didn't believe me. She said I was just making up stories because I missed my real father.
I did miss him. What daughter wouldn't miss her father? He was a good man, taken away too soon by elements out of our hands.
Coming back to reality, I snatch my shoulder out of his grasp and back away. His stare becomes sinister as he follows my movements.
"You can't do anything to me now. You're surrounded by too many witnesses." I spit at him as he comes closer. I try to hide my shacking hands by placing them at my sides, pressing them firmly to the black material.
"That's no way to talk to your step father, Jewel." I scoff at his statement.
"Step father? You must have become delusional while I've been gone."
He smirks and comes another step closer, shaking his head. "Oh no, your mother and I got married. It's a shame you weren't here to see it."
My eyes widen in horror. She married this bastard?! How desperate had she become? He was half her age! He could be my older brother for crying out loud.
"She wouldn't be so stupid."
The sunflower sheet is suddenly pulled back and a dark haired woman whom I hadn't seen in some time emerges with a disgruntled look on her face. She looks at Robert for a moment before turning and staring at me with confusion.
"Jewel, baby, what are you doing here?" I can't help but notice that she leans in to Robert's side as she wraps an arm around her.
"I was worried about you. What are you doing with him?" I glare at Robert. She places a hand on the center of his chest and looks up at him longingly. Disgusting.
"We got married, darling." She smiles at me and I scrunch up my nose. This can't possibly be real. "But what are you doing here? Does Dauntless know that you left?"
I cross my arms over my chest and glance between the two people in front of me. I can hardly recognize my mother anymore and as for Robert, he looks grimy and creepy as the first day I met him.
