Jewel's POV

"A pill?" I blurt out with confusion. A tall lanky nurse stands in front of me, holding out a small cup with a singular pill inside. We are the only ones in this section of the infirmary and for some reason, that worries me. I continue to stare at the foreign object, trying to process all the information she has just told me.

"It's called the day after pill, my dear. It is another way to prevent pregnancy." She seems nice enough and means no harm but after the way Eric treated me just a little while ago, I'm on the defense.

"How do you even know I'll get pregnant? It was my first time."

She shakes her head and places a concerned hand on my shoulder.

"My dear, that doesn't matter. Pregnancy can happen at any time."

Really?

I wish I hadn't been sheltered from all of these things. I wish I knew more about what goes on but my parents were very conservative back at Amity and transferring to Dauntless was supposed to set me free from a cage I just realized had been very very small. I know virtually nothing about the ways of being a woman or anything else for that matter.

My hand reaches out for the cup without my mind even thinking about it and I take it, skeptically still looking down at its contents.

One pill can stop a baby from growing inside me?

The nurse clasps her hands together and sends me a small smile before returning to her work. I keep the cup in my hand as I walk out but do not take the pill that lays inside of it.

The walk to Max's office is one of agony. Who knows what he will ask me. I wish Eric hadn't killed Ryan. This is his fault after all. Always being so possessive and thinking he can do whatever he wants because he's a leader. Did he think of me, though? How all of this would effect me? No. He thought of his own selfish needs.

I give the door a gingerly knock and a deep voice answers from the other side.

"Come in."

Slowly, I step in. A sudden amount of relief hits me as Max does not seem angry when he sees that it is me. He comes around his desk and pulls out a chair for me to sit in.

"How are you, Jewel?" He asks, taking his seat behind the desk once again.

"I'm fine. Thank you."

"I'm sorry to have to involve you in this matter at all but unfortunately, I'm obligated by faction standards to question certain unexpected deaths." Max seems annoyed with the whole situation and that gives me some amount of comfort sitting across from him. Hopefully, lying will be easy.

"It's been brought to my attention that Ryan attacked you. Is that true?"
