Dallas Pov

"Hey Johnnycake." I greeted Johnny. He was still in the hospital. "Hey Dal." His voice sounded tired. "They been treatin' ya good?" I asked. "Yeah... Real good," He responded. "Hey Dally, if I die-" I cut him off. "You're not gonna die! You're not gonna die. You're gonna be just fine, kiddo." I said. "Dal, when I die, I want you to look at a sunset. Alright?" Johnny requested. "Sure," I nodded. I got up. "Take care Johnnycake, I'll be back later." I walked out the door and headed to the lot for the rumble.

Afterwards, me and Ponyboy rushed to the hospital. We got pulled over. Great. I told the officer that Ponyboy fell over on his motorcycle. He seemed to believe it. Once we got to the hospital, we rushed to Johnny's room. "Johnnycake?" I whispered. Were we too late? "Johnny?" Johnny's eyes fluttered open. "Hey," he muttered. "Johnny, we won. We beat the Socs. We stomped them, chased them outa our territory." Johnny laid there motionless. "It's useless. Fighting, it's no good." I looked at Johnny. I kneeled down by his bedside. "They're still writing editorials about you in the paper. Ya know, for bein' a hero and all. They're heroizin' all of us now. I'm proud of you, Johnnycake." Johnny had a small smile. "Ponyboy." Johnny whispered. Pony leaned down "Stay gold, Ponyboy." Johnny whispered. "Stay gold." Johnny exhaled and his pillow sank. "Dammit Johnny, c'mon." I shook his arm a little. "This is what you get for helpin' people? You little punk." I stood up quickly and punched the wall before bolting out of the room and down the hallway. I walked out of the hospital. Johnny's not dead. He can't be. I never told him I loved him. I didn't get a chance. I was gonna tell him today, and hope that it'd be enough. But he's dead. He's dead. Gone.
