Chapter 24!
Elizabeth ended up staying with A for over an hour in the attic, they sat and talked about what they were going to do about their relationship. They had decided in the end that it would be best if they kept it a secret for the time being, they had no idea if they were even allowed to date each other. Elizabeth glanced at A's watch, she was late for her kitchen job. She said goodbye A and quickly left the attic. She hurried all the way to the ground floor of the building, she then ran along the corridor that led to the kitchen. She stopped when she got to the kitchen's door, she stood on her tiptoes and looked through the window of the door.
The kitchen staff were all busy preparing meals for the students. Elizabeth wiped her mouth on the back of her hand before she took a deep breath, she then opened the door to the kitchen. She entered the room while she smiled at a couple of the kitchen staff, none of them seemed to be bothered that she was late. She soon spotted Rose taking some jacket potatoes out of the oven, she was excited to see her old friend.
" Sorry I'm late Mrs Milder, I had to finish some course work before I came down to help!" Elizabeth said, she took a white apron from the coat rack and quickly put it on. " It won't happen again, I'll make up the time!"
" It's fine, you don't have to make up the time." She said before she held a hairnet towards her. " Pop this on and get stuck in, we've got two hours left until dinner is served. You can go and help Rose with the jacket potatoes. Mr Wammy has arranged everything, so there's no need to worry."
" Thank you Mrs Milder!" Elizabeth smiled.
Elizabeth put her hairnet on while she approached Rose, she caught her old friends attention when she pulled at her apron string. Rose gave her a hug, she told Elizabeth that she had missed her so much. She also told her about the new tea house business she was running, she had opened a tea house in a cottage not far away from orphanage.
" What do you want me to do?" Elizabeth asked.
" Well, I need someone to grate that block of cheese for me." Rose replied before she removed some tinfoil from a tray. " I know it's not an exciting job, but it needs to be done for the jacket potatoes. Remember to cut the cheese into smaller blocks first, I don't want a repeat performance like the time you grated your knuckles inside the cheese gratter. I don't think shredded knuckle jacket potatoes sound very appetizing, do you?"
" I was nine when that happened!" Elizabeth said with a sigh. " I've grown up loads since then."
" That's true, you're not my little Elizabeth anymore." Rose chuckled. " Let's stop gasp bagging, we've got a job to do! We can have a little chat at the Bonfire party. I'll be there serving food and keeping an eye on some of the younger children for Mr Wammy."
" Okay." EIizabeth nodded.
Elizabeth grated the cheese and topped the jacket potatoes with the cheese, she then wrapped the potatoes in tinfoil to keep them warm. She also helped with the toffee apples, it seemed like Watari pushed the boat out when it came to holiday events. When she had finished she helped to take the food to a little white marquee that was setup on the grounds, there were tables and chairs outside of the marquee . Some of the students had helped to build a bonfire, it wasn't too big and some of the younger students had made a Guy Fawkes that looked like Mr Ruvie.
Elizabeth goodbye to the kitchen staff, she needed to go and get changed for the Bonfire party. It was getting cold, she had decided to wear some jeans and a shirt. She put her red coat on and a pair of black gloves before she left her room, she then made her way down to the bottom floor of the building. She followed a group of students while they walked through the entrance and down the stone steps towards the pathway, it seemed like most of the students were already outside.
