I'm fine. I'm fine. She kept repeating to herself.
And she was. At first, leaving the place she thought 'hey, look at me. I'm a cool girl. I'm cool with how it all went. It's all fine."
But as the minutes based, and she gripped her phone tighter, expecting the message that never came, she became a little desperate, truly.
No, she thought, the night couldn't end like this. He liked her, she liked him...and as they all passed a room where he once kissed her - an old club - she reached for her phone herself. Letting the group of people she was now with lead her.
Walking in the night, while typing out a message quickly.
<<Hii! Crazy seeing you but nice. We're getting food then going to Plaza. Let me know if you guys do anything after.>>
She re-read the message. It was perfect in her mind. Causal enough, referencing their groups, nothing serious...but instead of hitting send, she save it to her phone and put it away.
She then pulled it back out, almost getting hit by a car, and clicked send.
The group she was with, consisting of Laticia, Ernesto and a few others were going to meet up a group of girls that E + L knew.
"Hiii!" The girls exclaimed, as if appearing out of nowhere and becoming extremely friendly in a very short amount of time. Clementine still want't used to that cultural thing, especially coming for the cold city of New York.
One of the girls, grabbed her by the arm as they all walked towards the mezcal bar where they were going to get tacos.
Clementine responded absentmindedly, doing her best to seem friendly only to mask up the sadness that was welling up inside of her.
They finally got to the pale and got a small table at the back of the place. It was dark but the walls were a stone white and it seems like most of the people had been there for a while already.
Clementine couldn't't believe that it was only around 10pm and she was already so tired and drunk from partying.
Sitting at the table, she felt her phone vibrate in her pocket, and waited a few moments.
She was't too tired for him, and she let the anticipation build up inside of her.
This is it, she thought. And it was only after the waiter brought the margaritas to the table, that she flicked on her phone.
Without opening the message app, she let her eyes flicker over the message once.
Showing no emotion, she placed the phone facing down on the table. Looking up, she rejoined the land of the living and did her best to smile her best smile. Use her best manners. She let the girl next to her, tell her about her new exercise routine for 45 minutes.
Clementine didn't mind that her ballet training had her know better. She smiled and nodded.
She split a fish taco with Laticia.
She split the bill with the rest of the table.
They spent two hours there, talking about people she didn't know.
It was only when she picked her phone up again to call the taxi, that she looked at it again.
<<Heyy, I'm calling it a night. Going to chill with my girlfriend. Plaza sounds fun, have a good time :)>>
And as she waited for the car on the street corner as everyone went to go walk to Plaza, she let the quietness envelop her into a darkness she hasn't yet seen.
As she got in the taxi, and watched the silent raindrops being to cover the window, a voice inside her uttered:
I think I'll be heartbroken forever.
