Chapter 42 The Deal
⏤☽❀☾⏤
Abella woke to a pounding in her head and an ache in her heart, before she could even realize why she was crying tears were cascading down her face. And when she realized what she had done those tears changed to sobs.
A noise at the side of the room stirred her from her bed and sent her head flying in the direction. Across from her the bone caver sat staring at her with an odd smile on his face.
"The boy is fine." He said and Abella- despite herself- visibly exhaled and the tension left her body.
"Where is he?" She asked rising on to her shoulders. How long had she been passed out? Was the high lords meeting still in session? Did Nyx leave after she almost killed him? A shiver racked down her body, she could still feel the agonizing pain that had filled her body as she attempted to cut his life's thread. Is that how it felt to kill every god? Would there be this pain when she killed the Malice? And why did she shed tears for Nyx? It was always in her plan to kill him. And yet she couldn't follow it through. She couldn't find it in herself to truly hate the man who would have traded her in to her captor who meant to kill her. She couldn't find it in herself to kill the man who betrayed his court and left his parents and his family. Her self-hatred boiled.
The bone Carvers smile grew, like he was amused at a joke she was not in on.
"He's still here, if that's what you mean." Abella narrowed her eyes at him. "He was sleeping the last time I checked. And though it might not have felt like it you didn't do any serious harm; you would have had to dig a lot deeper than that."
"Will it always feel like that?" Abella asked standing on her feet. Her light pink robe fell gracefully around her feet and swayed with every step she took. "Like I'm severing my own soul?"
The bone carver's smile grew so wide that Abella feared his cheeks would split open, but he did not respond to her question only stepped out of her way and cocked his head to the door. "He's in the guest hall in the room that was given to him. Why don't you go pay him a visit?"
Abella could hear the command under neath his tone, even if she wanted too, she could not deny him if he was instructing her. As she reached out towards her golden door handle the bone carver spoke from behind her.
"You are much more stubborn than I thought." He paused as Abella turned her head to him as she swung the doo open. "But you can trust Nyx he will not harm you now or ever."
Abella sucked in a breath and her eyes scanned her mentor, his teaching methods were odd and always had been, but he had never given her reason to disbelieve him. He had put her in harm's way countless of times, but each trail she had been in, ended up in her leaving smarter and more prepared to fight the death gods. But right now, staring into to his eyes that swirled with dark mischievousness she couldn't force herself to believe him.
