Haven leaned back in her chair, looking around the classroom she now occupied. Her eyes fluttered slightly as she tried to refrain from falling asleep. She flicked her wrist upwards, glancing at the clock on her Apple watch as it continued to count down until noon. Although, it seemed like the time was moving slower than usual.
"Does anybody have a response to my question?" her professor asked.
She tuned out her professor's voice, stretching lightly as other students offered their responses. She rubbed her eyes gently, still feeling the effects of her sleepiness. Finishing a head of small and long knotless braids late last night had her working on only three hours of sleep.
Her watch vibrated against her wrist, causing her to flip it upward again as her brother's name flashed across her screen.
Nino
You out of class?
I will be in a couple of minutes, why?
Can you come get me from the barbershop? Asia dropped me off but she's doing some right now.
Yeah
Bring me some Wendy's too.
You asking for too much now but okay, send me the address to the barbershop. Read 11:53 A.M.
She exited out of the thread before gathering the rest of her things as class got dismissed a few minutes early. Pressing the unlock button on her keys as she made it to her car, the lights quickly flashed in response. She hopped in, making sure to select her playlist before pulling off.
Haven headed to the nearest Wendy's, ordering Nino's food—knowing his order by heart. He could eat Wendy's every day of the week if he could, and she made fun of him for it all the time.
Receiving the Wendy's bag, she placed it in the passenger seat before entering the address of the barbershop into her GPS. The automated voice started talking, instructing her to "Turn left." About 15 minutes later, Haven pulled into the barbershop's parking lot. She took in her surroundings, noting that the area was fairly nice.
She glanced up, furrowing her brows at the sign that read "Cairo Cutz" in cursive letters. Grabbing the bag of food and her phone, she stepped out of the car. The simple thought of Cairo owning his own barbershop ran through her mind as she hit the lock button twice, making sure she heard the beep in response.
Haven walked up to the door, pushing it open as all eyes fell on her, causing her to mentally roll her eyes. She couldn't feel too self-conscious, knowing she did the same thing whenever she was somewhere new.
She walked past a few chairs filled with men, finally noticing Nasir sitting in a chair waiting alongside two other people. "Here," she said, handing him his food and drink, making sure to stick her hand in the bag to steal a couple of fries.
"Move." He smacked his lips, pushing her a little. "I was scared that you were gonna eat my fries on the way here. Thank you, though."
"You're welcome," she replied, deciding to sit down so she could get a better look at the suite without it being obvious that she was staring.
The suite had a simple modern aspect and feel, nicely decorated with black and brown as the main colors. All the barbers had stations that were neatly organized, each having their own unique touch while still matching the black and brown theme. Their names were plated above the mirrors. She thought whoever had designed and decorated the shop had good taste.
She glanced up at the front again, realizing she had totally missed the reception desk when she walked in, as nobody was sitting there to greet people.
"Nino." A voice spoke, breaking her out of her thoughts. She looked over, seeing Cairo walking out from the back, wiping his hands with a paper towel before tossing it in the nearest black waste basket. "Come on."
Haven still sat, taking notice of how Cairo's gaze shifted over the length of her body and finally stopped at her face. His gaze lingered on her for a moment before his view was blocked by Nasir moving to take a seat in the chair.
