After a day at work, Haven clocked out right out at 5 and made her way home. She wasted no time to get out of her scrubs. Now, standing at the center of her kitchen, the familiar comfort of her routine sat over her.
The evening sun cast a warm golden glow throughout the windows as she moved to remove the hair that fell over her shoulders and throw it in a loose ponytail.
Moving to the sink, she washed her hands before popping the cork on her favorite bottle of wine and pouring herself a glass. The gentle clink of the bottle against the glass was a prelude to the symphony of sounds that would soon fill the kitchen.
The lone speaker sitting on the kitchen counter hummed to life, filling the room with the sounds of her 2000's playlist.
With her wine in hand, she savored the first sip as she walked to the fridge. One by one, she pulled out all the ingredients for dinner, laying them out on the island: vibrant bell peppers, onions, lemons, and a plethora of other ingredients for the side dishes.
She reached for a chopping board and a knife, her voice moving with the sound of Mariah Carey in the background. As she lost herself in the simple, soothing act of prepping, Haven felt a sense of peace wash over her.
She loved this time of day, the moment when she could let go of the day's worries and immerse herself in the simple joy of cooking. The simple act of spending time in the kitchen with her grandmother when she was younger had left a lasting impact on her, teaching her the skills she now used to show love and appreciation for her man, just as her grandmother had done for her grandfather.
A few minutes later, Cairo walked into the house holding shopping bags in his hand. He placed them all on the couch, glancing towards the kitchen seeing as Haven moved around with her back turned to him. "Vibing to the music, this is how we do it, all night." She sung.
Cairo walked more towards the kitchen deciding on the intention to tease her about her vocals. She turned just in time, quickly catching a glimpse of him and doing a double take. She only smiled before focusing again on what she was doing.
"Just me and my boss, no worries at all, listening to Aston Martin Music, music." She continued. "Would've come back for you, I just needed time----"
"Ahhhh." He cut her off dramatically, covering her ears. "My ears, they're bleeding."
Haven sucked her teeth, shooting him a quick look. "You just hating. Don't be jealous 'cause I can actually sing."
"Sing where? Aint nothin' to be jealous about, baby."
Haven elbowed him as he wrapped his arms around her from behind, swaying her with him. She leaned back into him for a moment, savoring the warmth and comfort of his embrace. "How was your day?" she asked, resuming her duties with him still holding her.
