—The popping of grease from a skillet tore Haven's eyes away from her phone as she hurried over to the stove and flipped a few strips of bacon. She resumed her music, making sure the volume was low before grabbing everything out of the cabinet that she needed for the French toast batter.
Today was Cairo's twenty-fifth birthday, and to his surprise, Haven was planning to surprise him with breakfast in bed. Cairo would choose breakfast over any meal if he could, so dedicated to her plans, she wanted to make the presentation just right.
She ripped open the package to a brown table tray that she ordered from Amazon sprinkling it with some leftover blue confetti from the packing of his birthday gifts. She arranged fresh fruit in a small bowl, carefully sliced strawberries and blueberries for a pop of color, and set out a glass of apple juice.
Once everything was done on a large white plate she stacked a few pieces of french toast, sprinkling powder sugar over the top. She arranged his bacon on the side, cheese eggs, and a cup of warm syrup.
After she was done she glanced at the clock, noticing she surprisingly hadn't heard a peep from upstairs yet. Cairo was an early riser, waking up early to start his day off by walking Duke and then heading to the gym but today he rightfully slept in. Carefully picking up the tray, she slowly made her way up the stairs before pushing their bedroom door open with her foot. She looked over at the bed seeing he was still sound asleep.
She sat the tray down on their dresser before walking over to the bed and peeling the covers back on his side. She climbed on top of him, resting on his abdomen to lean down and place a few soft kisses along the spot on his neck. The action woke him up he turned his face towards her before squinting his eyes due to the bright lights. Haven smiled down at him, brushing a stray hair from his face.
"Good morning, birthday boy," she whispered, her lips brushing against his skin as she continued planting soft kisses along his neck. His grip on her waist tightened slightly, a low hum of contentment escaping him.
Cairo groaned contently, still not fully awake but enjoying the affection. "Mm, this is how we're starting the day, huh?" he mumbled, his voice husky with sleep.
"Maybe." She said, placing her hands over his as they slid up the oversized t-shirt she wore. "I do have something else for you though." She added, slipping off of him and over to the dresser. She retrieved the tray, carefully balancing the beautifully arranged breakfast in front of him.
"Damn." His eyes lit up at the sight. "Thank you, baby."
Haven settled into the bed next to him, smiling to herself, feeling a sense of satisfaction as she watched him enjoy the breakfast she had so carefully prepared. The little nod of approval he gave after each bite reassured her—it was something she always looked for, a silent confirmation that she'd nailed it.
